Baghdad Deputy Mayor Killed in Drive-By Shooting

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The deputy mayor of Baghdad was killed in a drive-by shooting Sunday night, officials in the U.S.-led coalition occupying Iraq (news - web sites) said Tuesday.

They said Faris al-Assam was near his home in the capital when the killers struck.

His death was a further setback to the coalition, which saw a rocket attack on its main compound Sunday and four suicide bombings Monday which killed 35 people and wounded 230.

"Faris was absolutely committed to the welfare of the citizens of Baghdad and the future of the city," said Hank Bassford, the Baghdad region coordinator for the U.S.-led administration.

"While we mourn the loss of an Iraqi patriot, those who committed this cowardly act should know that we will not be deterred from completing our mission."

Guerrillas opposed to the U.S.-led occupation of Iraqi have frequently targeted Iraqis, such as politicians and police officers, cooperating with the occupying authorities.

Their useage is accurate:

guer·ril·la or gue·ril·la ( P ) Pronunciation Key (g-rl)

n.

A member of an irregular, usually indigenous military or paramilitary unit operating in small bands in occupied territory to harass and undermine the enemy, as by surprise raids.

The reality of the pro Islamofascist controlled Reuters is biting them in their A$$. Since 9/12 many people have woke to their lies/spins and un truths in the war against terrorism. Their stock has started a free fall about two years ago and continues.

Here is the good news about Reuters:

Reuters sees 8 percent drop in quarterly sales

Reuters sees 8 percent drop in quarterly sales

LONDON (AP) -- Financial news and information provider Reuters Group PLC reported an 8 percent decline in sales for the third quarter, but said revenues for the full year might fall by less than the company had expected.

Sales for the three months ending Sept. 30 were 789 million pounds ($1.33 billion), down from 855 million pounds for the same period in 2002, Reuters said Monday. The group did not release quarterly profit information.

The company's share price rose by 4.4 percent to 244.75 pence ($4.14) in afternoon trading on the London Stock Exchange.

Sales for the first nine months of the year dropped 11 percent to 2.41 billion pounds ($4.07 billion) from 2.69 billion pounds last year.

"Trading performance this quarter was a little better than expected, driven by a reduction in the overall rate of net cancellations for the third consecutive quarter," chief executive Tom Glocer said in a statement. Reuters had forecast in July that annual sales would fall by 11 percent.

"We now expect the full-year decline in revenue to be 11 percent or slightly better," he said.

Cost cutting has continued to outstrip the erosion in revenues, and the company said it remains confident of exceeding the operating profit margin of 13.1 percent that it achieved in 2002.

Glocer said the group would simplify its number of products to just 50 from what was once 1,300. This would mark an aggressive effort beyond the target of 200 products that the company announced in February as part of its "Fast Forward" strategy to cut costs and streamline the company.

Reuters announced plans in September to move the majority of its London staff to the Canary Wharf section of East London in 2005, in a consolidation that it expects will save money and improve customer service

But the word "guerilla" carries with it considerable romantic baggage.

There's only one word that should ever be used for these people -- TERRORISTS. Period.

I suppose for variety, the term "those responsible for over 3,000 dead Americans on 9-11-01" could be substituted.

Word-choice counts.

"guerilla" almost always refers to attacks on decidedly military targets. The deputy mayor of Baghdad hardly applies.

Also, "small bands" is decidedly different from "one guy with an exploding belt".

I thought this article was about the Iraqi mayor being assissinated, not Reuters. Poor soul gave his life for trying to do right by his country and people.

The deputy mayor of Baghdad is a military target. You think we don't target leadership? Why did those guys in the B-1 get medals for blowing up a house in downtown Baghdad?

Furthermore, "The deputy mayor of Baghdad was killed in a drive-by shooting Sunday night", so it was a raid by a small band.

Defining a filthy terrorist as a guerilla is insulting to guerilla warfare. A fuller definition of a filthy Muslim terrorist would add:

"---and they have no limits to the depths they will sink to kill, even their own countrymen, women, children, and babies. They will use any means possible to murder or disrupt and overturn the peace; they will even strap a suicide vest onto their own daughters just to murder and maime innocent civilians, no matter if those civilians are their fellow Arab Muslims. A filthy terrorist will even kill a Christian just so he can spend eternity in Muslim heaven indulging in eternal sex with his promised virgins. While a man engaging in guerilla warfare can sometimes be in the right, a filthy terrorist is always a filthy terrorist, no matter how much he fears his false god."

I was referring to the last paragraph, where the word occurs. Killing the deputy mayor of Baghdad is an "assassination" not a "guerilla attack".

They are terrorists when they attack civilians, Red Cross, et cetera. They are guerillas or resistance when they attack military, administrative and political force. This is semantic difference but important in view of world that delegitimize target of civilian.

If the Baathist or terrorists or whoever keep this up, they may indeed yet see a house-to-house followed by a no-stone-left-on-top-of-another razing of certain neighborhoods as described by Michael Savage.

That's a mighty fine hair you're trying to split - to what end? We're in a guerilla war, and it's stupid (indeed counterproductive) to pretend otherwise.

His death was a further setback to the coalition,

Not only does Reuters incorrectly call these thugs guerillas, they pronounce their attack successful in that it caused a "setback." Reuters is encouraging these assassins.
