My daghter was asked to do a "report" on global wariming. We dutifully began to the research for her report and found some interesting statements quoted as fact by the Encarta encyclopedia on line. Here is a sample of what it says...
Global Warming, increase in the average temperature of the atmosphere, oceans, and landmasses of Earth. The planet has warmed (and cooled) many times during the 4.65 billion years of its history.
(encarta, msn)
I thought this was factually inacurate and begain to ask my daughter about her teacher and her politics. I was wondering if I might ask my fellow FReepers for some guidance on this report. Should we just suck up to the teacher and make a "nice" report, or give some other points of view? I thought it might be interesting to have her hand in a report, "Global Warming: Fact or Fiction", but was a little concerned about starting a bruhaha with her democrat lib teacher.
Perhaps my fellow Freepers can pitch in and help us with possible titles and reseach.....

Global Warming, increase in the average temperature of the atmosphere, oceans, and landmasses of Earth. The planet has warmed (and cooled) many times during the 4.65 billion years of its history. Which part(s) of this statement do you find inaccurate?
There have been times in the past when there was no polar ice caps (warmer), just as there have been times in the past when nearly the entire planet was covered with ice (colder).

Be carefull with how you do this. Enviornmentalism is a religion to alot of these people and they are quite devout. Attacking there faith with facts makes alot of them lash out.

Your MSN Reference said:
"Global Warming, increase in the average temperature of the atmosphere, oceans, and landmasses of Earth. The planet has warmed (and cooled) many times during the 4.65 billion years of its history."
And you find this statement to be inaccurate? Why? There is ample geological evidence that vast areas of the continents were covered with glaciers not just once, but several times. Ice core samples taken from both the Northern and Southern Arctic regions yield evidence of cyclical warming and cooling. Careful measurement and analysis of various radioactive isotopes in certain rock formations supports a rather ancient age (in human terms) for the planet Earth.
Golly, there are a lot more "wacko" statements out there trying to pass for "science" that you should be concerned about. This is pretty plain vanilla.

Sounds unusually correct. In fact this period of warming actually portends the coming ice-age which is what we are appropaching in the climatical cycle.
If you want some facts to contradict the "ill effects" of warming...
1. global warming (caused by CO2)
2. more warmth + CO2 = more vegetation
3. More vegetation = more oxygen
4. more vegetation = more atmospheric moisture = more rain
5. more O2, more, rain, more vegetation = COOLER temperatures
6. cooler temps = less vegetation = more CO2 = goto #1
Gee is this a cycle?

Ok so it's a bit simplistic - but aren't the leftist wing radical extremist all simple minded as well?

"Global Warming: Fact or Fiction" gets my vote. What's the teacher going to do, blame it on Bush? This isn't a political assignment.
Also, this is America, and if she[teacher] gets into a hissy fit, remind her of the first amendment. (Meaning, the right to free speech and press.)

Have her do web searches on "Vostok Ice Core" "Greenland Ice Core" "Holocene Maximum" "Little Ice Age".
Here's a kicker: link This study found that rising CO2 at the end of glacial periods was in phase or lagged the change in temperature: i.e., the increased CO2 may be caused by increased biomass as the earth warms from other causes.

May I suggest "The Global Warming Hoax" for the title. That would spin him up, but then again maybe a bit too much, LOL. An outstanding source of information is available at www.john-daly.com

I forgot to include the next sentence-
which most scientists believe results, at least in part, from human activities
I thought that it was an innacurate statement. It assumes that most scientists believe that there is global warming, and that humans are part of the cause.
My apologies for the omission.

The earth has warmed and cooled dozens of times in recent millions of years.
Human civilization based on agriculture was only possible because of the current moderate climate that phased in after the last ice age.
One fact is clear.
The ice will return.
Core samples obtained from the Greenland glaciers indicate a very regular pattern of warming and ice.
According to the studies I've seen, the next ice age is overdue!

From here:
http://www.clearlight.com/~mhieb/WVFossils/Carboniferous_climate.html "Today the Earth warms up and cools down in 100,000- year cycles. Geologic history reveals similar cycles were operative during the Carboniferous Period. Warming episodes caused by the periodic favorable coincidence of solar maximums and the cyclic variations of Earth's orbit around the sun are responsible for our warm but temporary interglacial vacation from the Pleistocene Ice Age, a cold period in Earth's recent past which began about 2 million years ago and ended (at least temporarily) about 10,000 years ago. And just as our current world has warmed, and our atmosphere has increased in moisture and CO2 since the glaciers began retreating 18,000 years ago, so the Carboniferous Ice Age witnessed brief periods of warming and CO2-enrichment."
I realize this may be a bit much for an 8th grader, however, it shows that the Earth does periodically warm and cool.

I don't understand your concern. Global warming, in fact, is not disputed. Cleopatra's Palace was not built underwater - It wound up that way when the water rose.
What's that got to do with human activity?
Like, nothing. One Krakatoa produced more pollution than the entire human race, ever.

At the following link, find a listing of the studies, commentaries, books and media appearances by Cato scholars that address the issues surrounding global warming.

An excellent overview that presents the science behind the claims and the science behind their refutation.
