The South, says Sen. Zell Miller, is misunderstood and largely ignored by politicians.

And those politicians who are running for his Democratic Party's nomination are too liberal, says the Georgia Democrat.

Specifically, he assails former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean for stereotyping Southerners last week by saying, "I still want to be the candidate for guys with Confederate flags in their pickup trucks."

Zell pretty much sums it up perfectly. He's a fine decent man.

Mr. Miller said he wants to throw his party a "life preserver."

Apparently Miller's emotional attachment to the party has left some residual fog he needs to work through. The Dims left the good people in this country decades ago. And some, including Miller, think they can be turned around. I don't think so; they're too far gone. Leave 'em be.

I am absolutely infuriated with these Demonrats' failure to represent me.

I have relatives who died killing Yankees, and I have a sticker on the back of my pickup which consists of a Confederate flag with the label "Redneck" attached. But I don't live in the South!

Do I have to move somewhere below the Mason-Dixon line before Mr. Dean or Mr. Miller will recognize my cultural identity??

This is clearly cultural discrimination against "Confederate Expatriates". And here I thought all along the Demonrats were my last hope for "Inclusiveness"!

Sigh... Another beautiful dream, vanished in the smoke of partisan politics... More hopes for a cultural identity, dashed on the rocks of... (running out of ideas here...)

"Howard Dean knows as much about the South as a hog knows about Sunday."

Wow. I wonder if he came up with that spontaneously or if he'd thought about saying it before he spoke.

Great quote, at any rate.

Mr. Miller, who says he has never met a tax cut he didn't like, credited Mr. Bush's tax cut for reinvigorating the economy and said it is the one issue on which Democrats lose.

beautiful stuff

But with the exception of Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut and Rep. Richard A. Gephardt of Missouri, Mr. Miller said the candidates "have managed to make this a double feature of the worst of the Democratic Party."

The voting records tell the story of Miller and the two candidates he finds exceptional.

Miller 47% ACU

Gebhart 8% ACU

LIEberman 20% ACU

"Mr. Miller addressed the question most often put to him..."
