I've been known to mispell my own name on occasion.
Only by a letter or 2!
I wish proofreading helped but I always notice something 0.5 seconds after I click on "post."

Martin, thanks again for the links but help me with a little more knowledge if you can, please.
I've just started mailwasher and am getting used to it.Of all the links you gave above,I haven't yet tried the firewall tests or alternate browsers.
Shoot the Messenger seems to "not" apply to me because I am running Windows 98.Am I correct?
With the Windows Updates I download "direct x 9.0b" but can't seem to find or execute it.All other updates I've gotten easily.Any ideas?I'm not computer savvy and your help has been greatly appreciated.
All the other links you gave are working together very well for me,I'm really tickled with them. :)

Are you running firewall software? It's always a good idea, even if you have a dialup connection and (gag) AOL. And if you're running a firewall, it's always a good idea to test its effectiveness with those free tests.

Yes, I think that "Shot the Messenger" program was custom-made for Windows XP because:
- Messenger is much more integrated into the operating system in XP than 98; and
- Like it or not, XP is becoming more widespread than 98.
- With the Windows Updates I download "direct x 9.0b" but can't seem to find or execute it. All other updates I've gotten easily.Any ideas?
I don't think you need to specifically need to execute DirectX -- if you have another program that needs it (typically higher-end game programs), that program will use it. Think of DirectX as a background utility.
- All the other links you gave are working together very well for me,I'm really tickled with them.
Glad to hear the links were useful!! <|:)~

I've got the firewall from your link working but haven't used the tests yet.I will later today.
The direct x 9.0b downloads to me and shows on Windows Update to have downloaded but each time I check for updates, the Updates site tells me I need to download it again, even though my download history shows it to have successfully downloaded several times.
Oh well,I've gained a lot and am learning as I go.
Thanks again and if you ever need any problem critters removed from your place, maybe I can return the favor.:)

I am on a dialup and anytime I'm on the computer,it's because I'm on heavy prescribed pain meds that knock my mental functions all to heck and I can accomplish very little elsewhere or even move around safely.
I've now put to use every link from your post #39 except an alternate browser and all are complimentary to each other. If I can put these to use in my condition, anyone should be able to and get these free safetys installed for themselves.I still can't figure out why the Windows Update keeps saying I need the DirectX 9.0b but that's no big deal.
I don't quite understand what an alt. browser will do for me yet.Would you suggest I try Mozilla or Opera as an alternate browser or will I have to make many changes in trading over and possibly become confused in the swapover?
Also, are there any simple, basic things I should be doing, like running the scandisk and defragmenter, that I may not know about or be doing through my simple ignorance of computers?
I can't put into words how much your tips are appreciated and any other thoughts you come up with can only put me even deeper, happily, into your debt.:o)

I like the Opera browser.
It gives you good control over what cookies (if any) are placed on your system and has internal popup control.
It also imports MSIE bookmarks well.

I tried the "trial" freeware Spybot/Spykiller. It misidentified a genuine library in my TaxCut software for 2000 as a keylogging trojan. When it had listed that and some real ad software, it refused to clean them unless I paid 40 dollars for the full deal. (I wasn't in the mood, especially after researching the so-called "keylogger" and finding it spurious.) Then it didn't uninstall itself when I ran the "uninstall" procedure. (Had to manually delete the folder.)
Not a good impression.

I'm with you Imp, I've been using Norton products since the middle 80's and have alway found them to work very well ~ I'm currently using Norton Systemworks 2003 and it's great.

I work for a military contractor and they block any pro-gun sites also. Probably for the safety of management .... he he.

Thanks for the ping, ChefKeith.
great posts & links here re: stuff. Thanks MF!
MailWatcher seems to run pretty well, btw. Now if I could only get it hooked up to my yahoo account. I get more damn spam there lately than a sailor at sea, I reckun. I'm too damn cheap to pay 'em off to use their tools.

I'm too damn cheap to pay 'em off to use their tools. Me, too, although they now offer *some* degree of spam filtering with their free e-mail accounts.
