"...a new nickel to be released in 2004..."Roy Underhill and I prefer tthe traditional design, but I feel that Jefferson would like the Lewis & Clark.
OTOH, the Lousiana purchase was such a coup! Just my two cents worth, but what do you think, it's your dime.

It is still just a token representing 5/100 of a credit.

I can hear the PC wing now:
"This is an offensive depiction of the history of this Nation, which we must protest!!
First the "Peace pipe" - This was a tool by the Native Americans, the rightful owners of this country, to induce themseleves into a state of intoxication, promulgated by their depression over the theft of their peaceful lands to the greedy, money grubbing White European men.
Second, the ax - This is a symbol of an early weapon of individual destruction and should not be depicted on an American coin. How can we claim zero tolerance at our schools while our kids walk around with pictures of murder weapons in their pockets!!!
And don't even get me started on Lewis and Clark, these men, directed by their greedy White masters, opened the door to the final destruction of a land where millions of natives lived in a happy, peaceful coexistance with one another. And one more thing, about the Loisiana Purchase, a theft perpetuated by greed......

Well I know there's going to be a lot of feathers ruffled on this thread but I like the changes. It's time for our coins to get a new look. And I'm hoarding a lot of state quarters. I save every one I get because I promised my wife I'd take her to Hawaii when the Hawaii state quarter comes out. By then, I'll have enough money in quarters to take the trip. Already I have $1,800 worth of state quarters. That should cover the airfare and a couple of nights in a decent hotel right there. I'm planning on taking two weeks though so I have a lot more quarters to hoard.

Of course, this still doesn't answer the question of why with current prices, we need any coin demoinated less that $0.10. What transaction needs it? (And don't say "sales tax", because current registers are busy rounding to the nearest penny as it is.)

I noticed that there is no "In God We Trust" on the coin.

I noticed that there is no "In God We Trust" on the coin. It should be on the front side which apparently isn't being changed.
