Hatch Warning: Sen. Rockefeller Risks 'Serious Criticism' for Memogate

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Ut., said Thursday that Sen. Zell Miller, D-Ga, was right to charge this week that a memo outlining plans by Senate Intelligence Committee Democrats to politicize Iraq war intelligence borders on "treason."

But the Utah Republican defended the committee's ranking Democrat, Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-WV, saying he shouldn't have to resign as the committee's vice chairman even if he's found have authorized staffers to prepare the bombshell document.

Asked about Sen. Miller's comment on Wednesday that the memo was "treason's first cousin" and that "heads should roll" over the episode, Sen. Hatch told radio host Sean Hannity, "I happen to love Zell Miller and I do agree with that because bad intelligence results in the deaths of Democrats and Republicans - in other words, our people."

But Hatch refused to call for disciplinary action against ranking Democrat Rockefeller, recommending instead that Republicans "publicly ask the Democrats how they reconcile [preparing such a memo] with the critical need for non-partisanship."

When Hannity said that his sources had identified Rockefeller as being responsible for the memo, Sen. Hatch turned defensive.

Noting that the West Virginia Democrat "has worked pretty well with [Committee Chairman] Pat Roberts," the Utah Republican said, "I really doubt that Sen. Rockefeller would have anything to do with trying to make [the Committee's investigation] that partisan."

Asked what would happen if it turned out that Rockefeller was implicated in the memo scandal, Hatch replied, "Well, it's a serious issue. I mean, it would be, you know - he would be seriously criticized if that were the case."

"I like Sen. Rockefeller very much but, I mean, that wouldn't be right," he added.

Despite the national security breach, Hatch said it would be unwise for the White House to stop cooperating with committee Democrats, saying he feared that the press wouldn't permit it.

"The can't [stop cooperating] because the major media in this country . . . is always on [the Democrats'] side and they don't ever get called to account," he complained. "If [Republicans] did something like that it would be front page headlines all over the country. You know that."

What more do you want?

I understand your sarcasm but try this:

I want Orrin, or his son, or nephew, or best friend (Oops Sorry. We don't have a helicopter in our inventory that can lift Ted Kennedy) to ride a Blackhawk around Tikrit every day for a month. I want him to get off of that helo and I want him to walk the streets of Tikrit with a squad of grunts for six hours every day.

I want him to wonder who in his squad has the night vision goggle batteries that are still good. I want him to wonder when was the last time this rifle was zeroed. I want him to wonder what the little kid up there in the doorway is thinking as he keeps darting into and out of that alley next to the house.

I want Orrin to feel the stark unadulterated fear that zips down your spine when something goes 'bang'. I want Orrin to sleep sitting up in a Humvee for two hours on two hours off every night for a month and the entire time he is doing this service for America I want him to think about the Democratic Party wanting him to die while he's there. I want him to read in the paper about how the 9 dwarves and the US Press really want him to come home in a body bag so that his wife and children can be interviewed about, "How does it feel that Orrin was killed?" and "Is the war worth it?"

I want him to do that and come back to us in December and sit down with Sean Hannity again and tell us then how he feels about Senator Rockefeller.

Is that too much to ask a US Senator to undertake or better yet - CONSIDER before he spouts off about how he's sure that Senator Rockefeller didn't mean to allow the Intelligence Committee to become partisan.

What a perfumed prince.

I can't believe a state with as high a per capita representation in the United States military as they have not see through this guy.

He sickens me. < /Rant >

Regards,

TS

oooh, Senator Hatch, the Dims are quakin' in their boots now! Don't you get it? It's wimpiness like you're currently exhibiting that allows them to USE you! Defending bipartisanship is fine, except this memo is proof that bipartisanship is nonexistent. Yes, you've done a decent job of standing up for judicial nominees, Senator. However, I'm extremely disappointed that ALL of you supposedly Republican senators are daintily tiptoeing on this issue. And I'm downright firebreathingly angry at all of you for not censuring the Teddy Kennedy ("the fine senator from Massachusetts" as you would say).

We are no longer being represented. I find it revolting...and perhaps many of us will be doing just that.
