American banker [Merrill Lynch] found dead in Hong Kong storage unit

Police found the body of an American investment banker wrapped up in a storage unit, and arrested his wife on suspicion of murder after determining today he had died from head injuries.

The Wall Street firm Merrill Lynch said the executive, 40-year-old Rob Kissel, had worked in its Hong Kong office for about three years as a managing director in debt markets.

Kissel's wife had gone to the authorities on Thursday with a complaint that her husband allegedly assaulted her a few days earlier, and she was taken to a hospital but soon left without explanation, according to a police statement.

A colleague of Kissel's reported him missing later that same day and police said they went to talk to the wife at the couple's home in the posh Tai Tam area of south Hong Kong island.

The wife gave police keys to a nearby underground storage unit she'd rented and investigators found the body there, wrapped in plastic sheets and a carpet.

An autopsy found that Kissel had died three to four days earlier of head injuries, said police spokesman Sidney Chan.

Kissel's wife, a 39-year-old American who has not been identified by name, was detained for questioning as soon as the body was found, police said. After the autopsy results came in, the police said they were holding her on suspicion of murder.

Police spokeswoman Kaman Chong said earlier today that the wife had become too distraught to give a statement and had been hospitalised while in custody.

Merrill Lynch was "working with investigators and refraining from any statements," according to spokesman R G Rosso.

Kissel had formerly worked for investment bank Goldman Sachs in Hong Kong. He was born in New York City, according to US Consulate General spokeswoman Susan Stevenson.

I almost guarantee that if he had married "native" he'd not be dead right now. Leave it up to good, old-fashioned American men and women to murder their spouses.

I, of course, would change my answer if he was into beating his wife. But I doubt that this guy was a big-time abuser. Just call it a "hunch."

managing director in debt markets

Interesting, considering that speculation on the odd spread between computer posted prices in the bond market not reflecting what the floor traders were trading this morning - something that Rick Santelli noted appeared to possibly be "foreign" intervention. Especially interesting since the Chinese are huge bond holders at a period when the US is disputing their yuan value too.

Keep watch.

Wild guess: Mrs. Rob Kissel.
