Bush jokes about his beer-drinking days

When US President George Bush talks about his drinking days, he usually speaks in serious tones and often with a moral lesson attached, but he found a chance to laugh about them at the weekend.

During a meeting he held at a BMW vehicle factory in South Carolina with plant workers and suppliers, Spartanburg Steel Products president Stephen Thies told the President his company had an affiliate that was the only American maker of beer kegs.

"I quit drinking in '86, but I bet some of the people out here use the product," Mr Bush said. "I'm not going to point out which ones."

Mr Thies said: "Well, we did notice a dip in demand at that point in time."

To which Mr Bush replied, laughing: "Pretty observant fellow, aren't you?"

Later, BMW worker Archie Gist recalled a training trip to BMW's home country of Germany.

He told the Mr Bush: "We learned about the glockenspiel and lederhosen, and beer ... German beer. And let me tell you, if you all think things are big in Texas, you ought to see the beer in Germany."

A genuinely funny moment. Quite hysterical actually. The words don't really do this scene justice. I am sure liberals will not find these comments funny at all. How dare a conservative President laugh at himself and his own faults. Any links to the video of this?

Another recorded bit of important historical trivia by the indefatigable Reuters wire service leftists.

What I REALLY want to know is the conversation between the President and the mens' room attendant at this plant when he was handed a towel.

I caught the exchange on the cable night news. Having read the headline already, I was cringing before the clip ran. But in fact, the actual exchange was quite nice and sweet. This exchange revealed why so many people vote for him: he is normal and likeable.

Hopefully, President Bush -- whom I both like and support -- will also begin to have the same good will toward another possible "drug" he may have tried/used at one time: pot. Then maybe he will call off his D.E.A. goons and leave both recreational and medicinal users alone.....www.norml.org

All the self-confident grounded and mature men and women I have ever met are funny people too. So is Bush.
