Local School Holds Meeting To Ease Racial Tensions

Student Says He Suffered Fractured Knee, Bruises In Recent Attack

Students, officials and police officers held a meeting at Hamtramck High School Friday morning to sort out what some say has been a racial conflict that's been going on for years, Local 4 reported. Video

Four Arab-American and four black students were among those present at the meeting to try to ease the apparent tensions between the two groups.

Police say the divide has appeared to grow in recent weeks, and they reportedly fear it will get worse.

Some Arab-American students say they were teased by blacks while fasting for Ramadan. Two black students say they were attacked by Arab students while walking home from school.

Dale Edge, a black student at Hamtramck High, is among those who were allegedly victims to the violence. Edge reportedly suffered a fractured knee and bruises to his lower body in the attack.

"As we were running, the white Grand Am was trying to hit us the whole time, so we got to a local store near our house and we tried to run into the store," Edge said. "But, as we were approaching the store, they hit us with the car, and after they hit us, they all got out and started hitting us with golf clubs, bats and bottles."

One parent came to the high school Friday morning to pull her daughter out of class, fearing the girl would try to take matters into her own hands, Local 4 reported.

Other parents showed up hoping they could be part of meeting, but were not allowed to participate, according to the station's reports.

Officials say the meeting went well and hope the two sides are making progress.

Hamtramck used to be an oasis of working class Polish sanity surrounded by Indian Country. Sounds like the fort has fallen.

My daughters sang the Polish National Anthem at St. Hyacinth's down there last year. It is a beautiful church. Gated, because the neighborhood looks like a warzone. Being from Ohio, it scared me to death.

Odd, in my daughter's Texas middle school, a black girl was reprimanded for taunting hispanic students with, "Go back to Mexico where you belong!". In Detroit, these black students are tired of the Arabs. Oh well, maybe it's a more honest commentary on what a great many non-blacks feel like saying sometimes.

I was in Hamtramk in September. They still have the Pope John Paul II Bookstore on the main drag there (Jos. Campo?). Unfortunately the classic Hamtramk rock club, Lili's 21, is now closed. A few years ago on my way back from central Europe I stopped through Hamtramk. I had just visited Prague, Bratislava, Kosice, Krakow, etc. Stopped in the old church and went to Lili's. Talked to the two sons of the recently deceased owner (Lili). It had been a good run for their family there but they didn't seem to think that they would be able to hang on. They were right. It's a real shame what liberalism, socialism, and cultural Marxism did to dear old Detroit. She's still beautiful, in a way. But a more stark monument to cultural suicide one would be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in the Western world.
