History of ships named ENTERPRISE
http://www.totse.com/en/ego/science_fiction/enthst.html ^

***** INTRODUCTION *****

This is an updated and expanded history of ships named "Enterprise", and replaces the previous edition (uploaded in December 1988) which is still available in this data library. During the year which has elapsed, I've been able to obtain more detail on the U.S. Navy "Enterprises", track down the history of all British Royal Navy ships called "Enterprise", and obtain limited information on French Navy "Enterprises" and a Confederate "Enterprise.

Between 1705 and 1979, there were 12 'HMS Enterprises", while between 1775 and 1999, there were 8 "USS Enterprises". There have also been 8 NASA and Starfleet "Enterprises", 8 French "Enterprises", 1 Confederate "Enterprise", and countless privately-owned "Enterprises". As I researched the history of the name, I quickly realized that each of these ships had a fascinating history, and that the missions and patrols carried out by each ship are a reflection of the state of international relations and maritime technology at that point in time. I hope you will also find this interesting reading.

I read an interesting Star trek fact. On the sets of later incarnations of the show ( TNG DSN, Voyager ) they say you wouldn't believe the number of big stars who dropped by trying to get on the show in an extra role as any alien. They volunteer for uncredited roles just so they can know they were part of the Star Trek legend. They wouldn't give any names, but say you would be surprised at some of the names, not people you would normaly associate with Sci Fi or Star Trek. Most of the time they had to turn them down, I think due to union rules among other things.

Thanks for posting this, although I wonder why you excerpted it . . . this thread would have been useful long after your link goes dead.

Enough with the sci fi fakes.

This is the first Enterprise that should first pop into mind when that name is mentioned, USS Enterprise (CV-6)

It is a tragedy that the U.S. Navy allowed the most decorated and historic carrier in World War II to be scrapped in order to save $2 million.

The other real Big E -- CVN 65 (photo taken 9/21/2003).

Still going strong after 40+ years and still the fastest carrier in the fleet.

Hmmm... I wonder if that was really Rosie O'Donnel playing Morn on DS9.

My dad was a Marine Gunnery Sergeant and assigned to the forward anti aircraft batteries of the Enterprise beginning in early December, 1941 until injured in action off Guadalcanal in mid 1942. He fought in the Battle of Midway and all the other action early in the war when the Enterprise was virtually the only U.S. carrier in action. After being injured he was reassigned stateside, commissioned, and eventually retired in 1962. CV-6 had a glorious combat record and it was tragic to send her to the scrap heap.

I have always had a deep admiration for the Klingon warrior ethic. Every episode I saw dealing with the Klingon mythology has been just about memorized.

As shatner has been know to say get over if for god sakes it is a tv show.

The same way that Rush Limbaugh is a disc jockey. Will you "get over" him, too?

Don't look now, but that's not tribble spit.

The Shatner soundbite is the stuff of Trek legend, like so many other things - I did not fail to notice it.

As to the second - Hmmm. K'Ang and Fuzzybutt. Strange fellows...
