Experience Overrated, Ex Governors Say (Now You Know Why People Are Glad To See Gray Davis Gone!)
Los Angeles Times ^ | 11/17/03 | Mitchell Landsberg

Wilson agreed with Brown that Schwarzenegger had made a good start toward toning down the partisanship in Sacramento. But, he said, the onus is now on Democrats in the Legislature to cooperate with the new administration. If they don't, he said, Schwarzenegger should follow through on threats to use the initiative process to bring issues directly to the voters.

"He really has no alternative," Wilson said. "But I think there are a number of Democrats who are, as they should be, impressed by the magnitude of his victory. I mean, I think there is a pretty clear lesson."

Wilson said he has urged Schwarzenegger to concentrate on improving the business climate in the state, particularly by cutting the costs to employers of workers' compensation. He insisted that Schwarzenegger would stick to his campaign promise of not raising taxes, and would find ways to cut spending, no matter how painful.

Democrats, Wilson said, "know that he made that pledge and he intends to keep it. And what … should have been taught by the recall is that the public agreed with him when he said we should not spend money that we don't have."

Asked what Schwarzenegger would enjoy best about being governor, Wilson said it would be the satisfaction of "having restored the state to good health, and seeing it prosper again."

For once Pete Wilson gives good advice. He learned something from the disastrous tax increases he foisted on California back in 1991. Let's hope Arnold lives up to his pledges and teaches Sacramento that numero uno lesson: "Its time for our state government to live within its means just like the rest of us." And two more words from those of us who aren't ex-Governors to our new State Chief: "Good luck." And now go forth to do battle as our Governator!

"local governments" are already whining about how they'll have to cut police and fire depts. God I wish someone had the guts to tell these small-minded fools to shut up! Why in hell did you let your municipality get dependent on state and fed funds anyway? Petty-a** little fiefdoms...

Well, these local governments should get creative. Start handing out fines for DU protesters for J-walking is a good start. Increase the fines as well. quadriple the cost for demonstration permits, it costs money for extra police, make those that cause the problem, pay for it.

Local municipalities always cut the areas that directly affect their citizens.

This way they have a political issue.

It's so much easier than tackling the waste and redundancy in their own administration.

>>"local governments" are already whining about how they'll have to cut police . . . depts

Use the police for law enforcement on things that matter, and quit using them for revenue-enhancing speed traps that do little to improve public safety, and at least half of that problem is solved.

...quadriple [sic] the cost for demonstration permits,...

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
— The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution

Nathan, by what authority can any jurisdiction in America require a "permit" to exercise the Constitutionally protected right of free exercise of assembly? My question is an "all or nothing" proposition. If you support "quadrupuling" the "permit" fee then obviously you would have no problem applying the same twisted analysis to the rest of the First Amendment. Why not establish a "fee" for printing a flyer, or posting at FR? Why not require "licensure and registration" to attend church?

You need to take the "red pill".

I think Nathan means that he wants LIBERAL speech and demonstration taxed.

I'm very much for that.

Of course you are "for that"; you're a Socialist. In other words, you favor penalizing and/or taxing free speech which you find disagreeable. In 1939, you would have made a good little NAZI.

It's apparent that your role model is Adolph Hitler; mine is Thomas Jefferson.

Leave.

"The fact that he's reaching out, that's good," Brown said. He added that Schwarzenegger has an opportunity to reinvigorate the Republican Party in California by making it more moderate. "If he can move the Republican Party to the middle, the Democrats will be in big trouble," he said.

Breaking news, LA Times reports that Moonbeam Brown wants Schwarzenegger to move to the left. I'm so shocked.

The Democratic Party is leftist... I'd love for the GOP to occupy the middle and shove them permanently to the political margins.

Why, of course I'm a socialist. That's why I've been on Free Republic for nigh unto four years without being Viking Kittied.

Neat! Never thought of it before, but I like your idea, Mister.

In 1939, you would have made a good little NAZI.

Well, except for the fact that I'm Jewish.... :o)

It's apparent that your role model is Adolph Hitler;

You just proved by example, Godwin's law.

Godwin's Law

Godwin's Law     prov.     [Usenet] "As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one." There is a tradition in many groups that, once this occurs, that thread is over, and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever argument was in progress. Godwin's Law thus practically guarantees the existence of an upper bound on thread length in those groups. However there is also a widely- recognized codicil that any intentional triggering of Godwin's Law in order to invoke its thread-ending effects will be unsuccessful.

Leave.

No. It annoys you that I stay, and my sole pleasure in life is reducing you to a hand-wringing, spittle-launching wreck.

Matter of fact, I would like to take your idea of penalizing and/or taxing free speech which we find disagreeable, and taking it one step further.

I'd like to round up all people who's opinion differs from mine, and place them on endlessly running cattle cars, destined for the concentration camps where the furnaces are running night and day.

Night and day.

The horrific screams of the damned rake, like icy knifes, through the darkness as the search lights attempt to floodlight anyone who dares to try to escape the tangles of barbed wire, as the barking dogs track those few brave souls who defy us.

WE ARE THE MASTER IDEOLOGY! WE SHALL PREVAIL! IT IS DESTINY!

You're a legend in your own mind.

And how odd (and pathetic) it is that you proclaim that your "sole pleasure in life" is "reducing [me] to a hand-wringing, spittle-launching wreck."

You support punishing speech and/or assembly you do not agree with, which puts you in good company with historical tyrants. Forget the reference to Hitler; it's not necessary (just handy). The fact is, by your own words, you have put yourself in league with every tyrant throughout recorded human history.

At best, you're a neo-con. Deluded.

As "accusec" is not part of the English language, I have no idea what you are talking about.

You forgot to get your panties in a bunch over the concentration camps I propose. We will do grotesque but informative experiments on those prisoners, in which we graft frog gills to them to see if they can exist in ponds. The wailing and gnashing of teeth will be an exquisite joy as we spray Nair on their legs, causing all their hairs to fall out. Oh, the tortures we will visit on those who disagree with us! Oh, extasy! Oh, sweet rapture!

And the neat part about it is, I will appoint you as the UberLeader of this wonderful endeavor! I am glad you have volunteered your loyal service. I, your Maximum Leader, will reward you well.

Now excuse me, I have to annex the Sudatenland. BRB.

Three Schwarzenegger posts in breaking news -- when none are about actual breaking news?

A bit much.

You over do it. I know you love Schwarzenegger and all but your operative act is not what we need. We are all already on the same side for the most part -- ie we are conservatives (there are exceptions, of course, and interestingly you are one of them Mr Union thug supporter).

As far as Schwarzenegger and the LA Times, there was a hilarious article yesterday that said Davis lost because he was too conservative!! Funny.
