A GUY WITH NO CLUE WHO LEFT ME IN A STEW (WHY NYC IS FULL OF LONELY LIBERAL 30-SOMETHING WOMEN)

I lay awake in bed for three hours straight this Thursday, panicking that I have become way too choosy when it comes to blind dates. After all, isn't New York full of lonely women in their 30s who think no one is good enough?

You set yourself up when YOU OFFERED TO PAY for the dinner.

Exactly

Of course she wants it both ways. Typical lib feminazi.

A friend of mine went on a dating service date several yrs ago.
He opened the car door for her. She complained that she could open it herself.
He closed the door, walked around to the driver's side, got in and drove off. Left her standing at the curb.

I can just see this guy saying to himself, "I think I'll go out with her and stick her for the food and the cabbie. I'll judge her for future dates on how she handles that."

I should relish being confident enough not to waste time with people who don't make me feel great.

Perhaps the poor fellow was daunted by that awesome responsibility. Hard to blame him, really...

From his perspective, what started out as a blind date, a chance to meet a new, perhaps exciting and intriguing woman, changed into being the unwitting subject in her next article! She's paying and charging it off as research? "I'm a lab rat?" Note to self: no dates with comediennes looking for new material, no dates with writers hoping to get past their current writer's block, no dates with religious zealots hoping to find another man to save....the failure to hold the door, the stiffing her for the cab was his message: no need to call for another date.

Sounds like an exact description of women in Toronto. I suppose some things are universal. You hold the door for them and act gentlemanly, and they get upset, you treat them as an equal and don't act too gentlemanly and they get upset....blah blah blah blah.

Add to that the attitude that it's always 'is he good enough for me' and never 'I hope I am good enough for him'.
It's no wonder women have dating so screwed up, they wanted the rules changed and now they don't know what the rules are.
She picked up the check which is role reversel but wants the old rules of seeing her home. I am confused.

I'd like to buy that guy a beer! Actually, on another thread, someone related a story about a woman who glared at him when he held open a door. I told him that my response would have been to say "Don't flatter yourself. I'm an equal-opportunity offender -- I hold doors open for EVERYONE."

"moving up to Alaska. Lots of space up there -- I don't like feeling hemmed in by people. Not a lot of women up there, but who knows, I might have BETTER luck finding reasonably conservative women up there than in any city in the lower 48."

If you want a conservative woman, go to a conservative Sunday school (e.g. Southern Baptist, Church of Christ). Should you really be surprised if you don't find enough conservative women hanging out in 24hr meat markets, er, bars?!

One can only imagine what she did to Aron to make his hit the road.

I read her column every Sunday, probably because something about her irritates and fascinates me at the same time. If I recall correctly, Aaron started out as a friend, and over a long period of time they slowly realized that they loved each other and really wanted to be together. For several columns everything was bliss. Then they hit a bump in the road: politics.

Turned out Aaron was a Republican, and he (gasp!) supported the war. She wrote a column about it in which she moaned about how awful it was to have a mate who wasn't as politically perfect as she was. They began to argue. She sent him a series of emails containing "facts" about the war (probably gleaned from Dummycrats Underground). One of these charming screeds had in the subject line: "Read this, warmonger!" He stood up for himself, which apparently infuriated her even more. She ended that column with the observation that her parents were coming to town the following week to meet him, and that they were even more liberal than she was. She wondered how dinner would be with three liberals and one conservative.

The next column, suddenly Aaron was gone. He had dumped her and she was devastated. She didn't go into too much detail about his reasons, but I have my suspicions. I think Aaron looked ahead to that dinner with her folks and realized that he would have to contend with Bush-bashing from all sides at once, all night long. And if he went ahead and married this girl, he could look forward to more of the same at every family gathering for years to come. When you factor her existing flakiness into the equation it looks like Aaron did the smart thing when he bailed.

My girlfriend is a liberal, but she knows I won't ever accept anything liberal, ever.... that is the deal.... I am anti communist and absoulutely correct. She needs more evidence that liberalism is wrong.

I told him he had to be able to party with me at a muddy music festival for three days

Here's a newsflash for ya, coolie. You are 32 years old--your Lollapalooza days are long since over.

My god, people really never think they are old anymore. It's down right weird.

Nerd is a hipster style since the mid-1990s.

See, as examples, all the members of the band Weezer and/or some incarnations of Elvis Costello.

Like so many other career women, she "wants it all". A tall, handsome, witty, fit guy who is independently wealthy, has impeccable manners, will as a concession to her feminism let her open the door but will always open it first, who pays without being asked, and who will constantly praise her brilliance, never question her beliefs and always savor her success. Unfortunately, these Cary Grant types are somewhat rare.
