Florida! Help Put A Stop To Gun Registration!

Monday, November 17, 2003 Representative Lindsay Harrington (R-Punta Gorda) has introduced House Bill 155, a bill to prohibit gun registration in Florida. NRA and Unified Sportsmen of Florida (USF) support this critical legislation which is scheduled to be heard by the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, November 19 at 8:00 a.m. It is extremely important that Florida NRA members e-mail the House Judiciary Committee IMMEDIATELY and urge its members to support HB 155, and put a stop to gun registration by government agencies, local governments, and law enforcement agencies. To locate e-mail addresses for House Judiciary Committee members, please visit www.NRAILA.org and access the "Write Your Representatives" tool. Additional background information on HB 155 can also be found at www.NRAILA.org, and please be sure to share this critical legislative alert with your family, friends, and fellow Second Amendment supporters.

Very good. Keep the pressure on. Perhaps we can roll back the illegal gun registration schemes that already exist in federal law.

I don't understand. Florida doesn't have gun registration (You can even keep a loaded weapon in your vehicle without a Concealed Carry Permit). Pre-emption also forbids local governments from enacting their own gun laws. What's the point of this bill?

"Pre-emption also forbids local governments from enacting their own gun laws. What's the point of this bill?"

I saw it posted on the NRA-ILA website, so I posted it as a courtesy to Floridians. Maybe the sponsor is ignorant of your apparent pre-emption law. Maybe he wants free publicity. Maybe he heard rumbles of a statewide registration scheme.

Do you have de facto registration of your handguns with your right to concealed carry? Or is it some licensing scheme of individuals, regardless of particular handgun?

I was confused too. Took a little while but I found it:

I seem to remember that some sheriffs wanted to keep firearm sale records for a certain length of time. That's the only thing that I can think of that this is in response to but, heck, that was several years ago.

I did the best I could about your previous question. Do you have any idea about the answers to the two questions above?

Good luck in your state legislature. Adios

The FL Concealed Carry Permit licenses the individual, not the gun. With a CCP, I can carry anything from a nail file to a shotgun, as long as I can conceal it.

Although there is no FL state registration of guns, they are de facto Federally registered via Form 4473 when you purchase from an FFL. Private transactions are just that in FL, private.

Thanks for the reply. I'm sure the *bang_list would like to know what happens with that legislation, if you're able to keep track of it. If not, no sweat. Adios
