Dean Calls For New Controls on Business, Democrat Seeks 'Re-Regulation'
Washington Post ^ | 11/19/2003 | Jim VandeHei

HOUSTON, Nov. 18 -- After years of government deregulation of energy markets, telecommunications, the airlines and other major industries, Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean is proposing a significant reversal: a comprehensive "re-regulation" of U.S. businesses.

The former Vermont governor said he would reverse the trend toward deregulation pursued by recent presidents -- including, in some respects, Bill Clinton -- to help restore faith in scandal-plagued U.S. corporations and better protect U.S. workers.

In an interview around midnight Monday on his campaign plane with a small group of reporters, Dean listed likely targets for what he dubbed as his "re-regulation" campaign: utilities, large media companies and any business that offers stock options. Dean did not rule out "re-regulating" the telecommunications industry, too.

He also said a Dean administration would require new workers' standards, a much broader right to unionize and new "transparency" requirements for corporations that go beyond the recently enacted Sarbanes-Oxley law.

Vladimir Dean shows his true colors.

Ted Kennedy wants to raise the minimum wage (IE throw the poorest out of work and increase unemployment to get more people dependent on welfare IE increase the size of the 'Rat electoral base)

Dean wants to make it more expensive to do business in the US, which will move more jobs overseas, where there is less regulation. It will also kill foreign investment into the US.

Their cry is, "It's the worst economy in 50 years!"

The corollary is, their proscriptions followed would bring us the worst economy since the 1930's.

Vladamir Dean is right. We've been attempting to get the Dead hand of government out of various industries since the late 1970's. Deregulation has been ongoing for the last 30 years and is one of the major reasons we had success in the 1990's.

People are right to be upset about dishonest business practices, but I see them as a law enforcement issue, not a regulatory one.

Hey give the guy a break, he's just looking after "the little guy" after all central planning and government control worked so well in the U.S.S.R. why wouldn't we want to give it a try here?

More government regulation of business? This may be a good idea. Our Governor Davis tried it here in California, and it worked really well for us, and made him a very popular guy.

Oh great, re-regulation, isn't that what Davis tried in the California energy crisis? Dean could have chosen a better word. Well, maybe not, we can use this one to OUR best advantage.

"We are socialists, we are enemies of today's capitalistic economic system for the exploitation of the economically weak, with its unfair salaries, with its unseemly evaluation of a human being according to wealth and property instead of responsibility and performance, and we are all determined to destroy this system under all conditions." --Adolf Hitler

If I were a Chamber of Commerce head, I'd be readying the big guns to tell Americans what "re-regulation" would cost them.

When politicians tax, spend, and regulate like there is no tomorrow, businesses either shut down or they cut costs.

PhiKapMom, give this a ping.

I don't about the Chambers of Commerce outside of N. California.

The ones in N. California for the most part are controlled by elitist leftists who work 24/7 to keep competition out of their towns. Then, they donate money to the democrats to vote them in as mayors and city council members. Many of these rat CCs supported Davis and opposed his removal.

I hope that it is different in other areas, but my cousins, nephews and nieces tell me it is basically the same where they live in other states.

Thanks for posting this adam.

For the rest of you who believe in capitalism, this is another warning sign re Metro Sexual Howie.

You can bet your last untaxed $ that he is/will be controlled by the Watermelon Jihadists who hate capitalism and would round up all us to live in Goron voting cities and feed us Soylent green and ride the buses that may run twice a day.

He sounds more like Jimmy Carter everyday. If that doesn't scare you, then you are on the wrong web site.

I heard recently on a talk-radio station that there are over 13 MILLION federal laws. Why are we allowing this? WE are responsible for change!

That doesn't include state and municipal laws.

Re-regulation is bound to be redundant. The current atmosphere is a nightmare, and Dean proposes a nightmare on top of a nightmare...this is insanity, in my opinion.

Those of us who have opposed most if not all of these laws on top laws have had no voice.

The left wing maggots who control the media have made most of these laws look like the second coming of FDR. Anyone who dares to oppose these new laws has been either ignored or made to look like an evil rich/right wing conservative in by the mediots.

Ah. So now the Deanster isn't content to stay the socialist course. He is expanding his horizons into fascism.

I, for one, am only only surprised in that it took him this long to show his hand.

Check on your local CC with conservatives who own businesses and get back to me. I would like to hear about some good ones that still believe in capitalism not fascism.

You're right, it's regulation without representation...

We DID oppose some of these laws--the ones we knew about, but this is really insane.

Sometimes I wonder where I live...
