WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Bush administration intends to open 8.8 million acres of Alaska's North Slope to oil and gas development, including areas considered environmentally sensitive.
The Interior Department was to announce the oil and gas leasing plan Friday, the day the Senate was taking a critical vote on a massive energy bill endorsed by President Bush but denying him his top energy priority, opening an Alaskan wildlife refuge to drilling.

"Instead of being a wilderness area," he said Thursday, "it will be an industrial zone subdivided by roads, pipelines, associated facilities, drill pads, maintenance facilities, etc., etc."Excellent! Glad to hear it!

Now if we could just drill that small wasteland in ANWR.

I spent a year inspecting DEW Line sites in '69-70! I was in the Prudhoe Bay area, visited Point Barrow and even observed the spring migration of the elk herds as they came down from the Brooks Range to their summer meadows in the ANWR!
I can say with absolute certainty that I never saw any migratory whales in and among the elk herds, white fox families, wolves, wolverines, and musk ox! I even saw a polar bear but no whales!
What's goin' on here?

Roger that. I grew up in the Yukon, and now live in the suburban Atlanta area. We have more wildlife here then I ever saw that far up north. The far north is beautiful, but in a barren, austere way. I challenge the tree huggers to spend one winter there. From what I've heard anyway, the caribou love the oil pipelines. The Alaskans are for this development. I'd trust them to be the best informed.

"important for the protection of migratory birds, whales and wildlife."
We don't need to protect any plants or animals up there where the oil and gas drilling is proposed. Birds are adaptable and more are around now than before civilization. Any whale on the North Slope shore is lost and going to die anyway. The wildlife up there is 98% mosquitoes, so who cares?

Why not drill off the west coast of Florida? There's lot of oil within sight of Tampa.

Would you explain to me why you prefer we buy our oil at inflated prices from countries who care nothing for the environment and support terrorists who want our extinction.
Is it wise to give our enemies so much money?
Is it wise to make our economy dependant on those who wish us dead?
To: chuckwalla
It was humor. I really want them to kill and eat a Carabou for me. I want them to drill all over Alaska, and if the animals get in the way, shoot them. I'm not kidding.

Roger that. I grew up in the Yukon, and now live in the suburban Atlanta area. Well, I don't know if I should envy you or pity you. heh.
We have more wildlife here then I ever saw that far up north.
Yup, I know that! I grew up on a farm in rural Ohio. I now live in Jersey. I have BEARS in my yard all the time. I had hundreds of acres to play in while I was growing up, but nothing to really fear. Now I am concerned to run upon mama and the cubs if I take a walk in the woods.(I have bear pictures if you want me to freep mail you a link or two).
The far north is beautiful, but in a barren, austere way.
Sure is, and the area to drill in ANWR is devoid of life.
From what I've heard anyway, the caribou love the oil pipelines.
Yes, they do. They prosper and rut in the warmth of the pipeline. The herd has VASTLY expanded post pipeline.
The Alaskans are for this development. I'd trust them to be the best informed.
And indeed, they should be the people to decide, not some enviroweenies in the middle of some metropolis.
