Surfer Girl Won't Give Up Her Passion
By MATT SEDENSKY, AP

KILAUEA, Hawaii (Nov. 21) - Before losing her arm in a shark attack, Bethany Hamilton was a top amateur surfer who was expected to turn pro. Now she is unsure whether she will ever surf competitively again. But she said she will not give up her passion.

AP
Bethany Hamilton says the worst thing about the shark attack was seeing her loved ones cry.

Just this past Halloween, she was lying on her surfboard, taking a break after catching some early morning waves, when the gray blur emerged near her left arm as it dangled in the Pacific.

Bethany was suddenly being jerked back and forth.

"I looked down at the red water," she recalled. "Right away I knew it was a shark and I knew my arm was gone."

The 13-year-old lost more than half her blood and all but four inches of her arm, though those who witnessed the attack say Bethany never screamed or panicked.

"There's no need for that," she told The Associated Press nearly three weeks after the attack, in one of the first in a series of interviews and TV appearances. "I wasn't that scared. I didn't think I was going to die or anything."

Tall and lean, with blond hair and a tan, Bethany has accepted her misfortune with remarkable serenity.

"There's no time machine," she said. "I can't change it. That was God's plan for my life and I'm going to go with it."

For all the nightmarish drama the shark attack conveys, Bethany recounts it with nonchalance: She arose around 5 a.m. on Oct. 31, heading out to do what she loves - surfing with her best friend, Alana Blanchard. After about a half-hour of action, she took a break, dangling her arm in the ocean when the 15-foot tiger shark attacked.

Blanchard's father, Holt, surfing nearby, used a surf leash as a tourniquet. Fellow surfers towed her in on a surfboard. She blacked out briefly, then woke up ashore.

When she reached Wilcox Memorial Hospital, another amazing part of the story unfolded: The girl's father, Tom Hamilton, had been lying on the operating table, moments away from knee surgery, when a doctor burst through the doors, saying the room was needed for a shark attack victim. When he heard it was a 13-year-old, Tom Hamilton's heart sank. He knew it was either his daughter or her best friend.

Bethany spent nearly a week in the hospital and has remained largely in seclusion since then.

When her bandages were removed - and her stump was revealed - one of her brothers turned white. Her mother nearly collapsed. And her grandmother went outside and wept.

On Thursday, her stitches were to come out and she awaited word on when she could return to the water.

"If I was like a person that just quit surfing after this, I wouldn't be a real surfer," she said. "I'm definitely going to get back in the water."

Bethany hopes to be fitted with prosthetics allowing her to continue not only to surf but also to play the guitar. She plans to try snowboarding for the first time this winter, and she is aiming for a career in photography.

Around Bethany's neck hangs a glittering gold surfboard - a get-well gift from a family friend. It has a diamond in the center and a bite taken out of the top, just like her own board, with its 16-inch gash.

Bethany said the attack is "pretty much all I think about," and she has revisited the horrible event in her dreams four times since the attack.

But she said: "If you don't get over it, then you'll just be sad and cry."

A followup to the article a few weeks ago, she seems to be healing up nicely.

Tough girl. I think she'll be just fine. It's rare to find non-whiners like this anymore.

That's so true. Although I wouldn't consider it whining when you lose an arm.

She is really an inspiration and example to all of us. God bless her!

I agree she's tough, but I think you will find plenty of non-whiner amputees in Walter-Reed Army Hospital these days too.

With an attitude like that, she'll be fine. She definitely sounds mature for her age!

G-d bless her. Good mind and heart. She's got a loving family and friends as well.

As for you....

May you end up choking to death on those plastic soda rings!

Don't bet on it..... from a comment by a friend and her quotes she's a devout Christian and doesn't seem to be ashamed of saying what gave her the strength and serenity to handle this situation.... a belief that God has a plan for her. I'm humbled by a young beautiful girl having the faith and serenity that is provided by true belief in the Lord.

If a movie is made I doubt it'll highlight the Chrisian angle unless made by producers that aren't uncomfortable with that message. Of course it's just my opinion and I could be wrong.

It's really a miracle...she's special..everything, and everyone there had to come together perfectly to keep her from bleeding out...

This isn't a Christian story, sorry to disappoint you. This is a liberal story. The hype is due to her being a female in a mostly male sport. The excessive and fawning media coverage is intended to advance a hyper-feminist agenda.

Finally a decent role model for young women.
Look out Brittney, you've been speared.

Notice the media is overlooking the fact that she is homeschooled.

Nonsense. This is a brave little 13-year-old Christian girl who has survived a shark attack. It's only natural that folks are interested in how she's doing. Apparently, her courage and belief is seeing her through this well. Your attempt to politicize it is specious.

That's so stupid. She's a talented athelete. BTW, what's wrong with women athletes competing in sports that they do quite well in (like surfing)?

Many prayers for a speedy well recovery to Bethany.

I don't think CanadianLibertarian meant any disrespect, but he is only stating the truth. I doubt that a run-of-the-mill teenaged boy who survived a shark attack would have received such attention. The fact that she was a competitive surfer girl is a major factor in the media interest. It's unusual, it's the hot new thing (see MTV's entire reality series called "Surfer Girls"), and it comports with the media's interest in advancing feminism.

It is the same thing with Jessica Lynch. She was made into a national hero by the media because she was cute, blonde, female, and a soldier who only joined the Army because she wanted to get enough money to go to college to be a Kindergarten teacher. Her story was an allegory for the senselessness of war (though I argue her story is proof that Clinton's feminized military is a disaster).

Shoshana Johnson was ordinary looking, black, and a single mom who chose the Army as her career. Both women were POWs, but who did the media harp on? The one that fits their big-picture agenda: War is stupid.

Do we hear from very many troops upon their return home who express the opinion that the fight in Iraq is, truly, a logical and righteous extension of the war on terror? No. 60 Minutes this week is doing a whole story on amputees at Walter Reed -- all of whom oppose the war in Iraq. We only hear of those who believe the fight is right from troops who have created their own blogs. 60 Minutes has no use for them.

I would like to see her succeed and become a pro surfer despite the injury. I have seen plenty of people limb impaired go onto higher things. She could still be the best surfer ever. Sounds like her attitude will also help ensure that.

Alot less rare among that age group than you might think. The boomers sure opened a Pandora's box in the 60's when they adopted the counterculture attitude in their youthful days. Little did they know it would come back to bite them on the arse in their post-Clinton old age when the new generation rebelled against the self-absorbed, feel-sorry-for-myself, victim complex typical of Beezulbubba and his peers.

At 13, she also may not be the child of some 60's ex-hippie, which certainly would have helped her case.

I also admire her courage and determination. That being said, if one of my limbs ever became a hors d'oeovre for a freakin' fish I would have to confine my watersports to a body of water no bigger than my bathtub. She makes me feel like a wimp.
