People Magazine Names Depp Sexiest Man (modified)

NEW YORK - People magazine has named Johnny Depp the "Sexiest Man Alive 2003," saying the actor, known for his "brooding eccentricities," has mellowed since becoming a father.

Depp, star of this year's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," has two young children with his girlfriend, French actress and pop singer Vanessa Paradis.

"Because he arrived at his new, happy place without selling out, without becoming slick or packaged or politically correct, he is a hero to his fans and an idol to his young co-stars," People says in its Dec. 1 issue.

The 40-year-old actor is known for hiding under layers of hats and blankets in his private life and behind oddball characters in his films, the magazine said. "But he is finally coming to terms with his own charisma..." Almost.

Depp has denied comments he made were meant to be "anti-American". The 40-year-old star was quoted as saying America was "like a dumb puppy that has big teeth than can hurt".

The actor had also been quoted saying that the US was a "broken toy", and that he would urge his French-based children to explore it and then "get out".

In an apology issued by his publicist, the Kentucky-born Depp said his comment was referring to the US being a young, growing nation compared to Europe.

He added that he now lived in France because his wife, the singer Vanessa Paradis, was French, not because he had renounced his citizenship.

The actor said he was "an American. I love my new country and have great hopes for it.

"My deepest apologies to those who were offended, affected, or hurt by this insanely twisted deformation of my words and intent," he said so eloquently.

Depp also has starred in "Edward Scissorhands," "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," "Sleepy Hollow" and "Chocolat." His upcoming movies include "J.M. Barrie's Neverland." A media mogul, who asked for confidentiality, said, "You can't make this stuff up."

People magazine named Michael Jackson first runner-up.

"People magazine named Michael Jackson first runner-up."

That IS a joke, isn't it?

As far as Johnny Depp is concerned, I wonder if People Magazine knows the meaning of "androgynous"? BTW, Princess Stephannie of Monaco is another androgynous-looking type, except she's female.

How many times do I have to say it?

Brett Favre is more sexy than any of those mentioned.

Ow! What a way to begin Saturday! Wow.

Saw Master and Commander Thursday on my day off and it is just a phenomenal movie. Can't wait til it comes out on video. I have to say that Crowe is the best actor out there today. He just has that Richard Burton ability to create the character. So many actors are just themselves walking through parts decade after decade. I call it the ~Nicholas Cage Syndrome~. ( ;

He evidently never found a bathtub or razor or toothbrush when he "arrived at his happy new place".

I hate to admit an error, but it looks like I was thrown off by the reference to Neverland. As it turns out, People's Top 10 runners-up were: Brad Pitt, Ashton Kutcher, George Clooney, Lenny Kravitz, Justin Timberlake, Hugh Grant, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Denzel Washington and Colin Farrell.

Hmmmmmmmmm, now this sounds like a story to tell!!!

Ok, all you women out there quit lusting and drooling over this Aussie. I do get the feeling that Crowe is not an airhead anti-American like pretty boy Depp.
