JFK: Breaking The News
Oregon Magazine ^ | November 21, 2003 | Larry Leonard

PBS, 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 19, 2003 – Following the visual of the Rebel Flag, a youngish, very short haired woman appeared on the screen. My reception is fuzzy here, so while I can hear the audio perfectly, I cannot always see the picture clearly. As near as I could tell, she was in a setting which spoke of academics. It may also have been an office conference room. She had the large round glasses of the modern female “scholar.”

The first time she opened her mouth, she testified to the total bias, the total Orwellian historical rewrite, that one has come to expect of public broadcasting. Here is what she said..

”There was a lot of right wing resentment about the President’s visit. This was because of his support of the civil rights movement.”

That's the key. Remember it. Right wing means Republicans, of course. Republicans were against the civil rights movement.....(SNIP>

Good piece. Has some facts that will horrify thinking Democrats, if there are any.

Without reading the full article yet, I can tell you that I have read tons of books, materials etc on JFK's death. The right wing spoken of was the right wing of the democrat party that existed then, not republicans.

Ever special I watch this past week refers to that right wing, and I have been upset about that since these days that denotes republicans, and that distinction isn't being made. No one expects democrats to have a right wing these days.

Than you so much for the ping. I think this is the finest piece he's ever written.

"The Republican right wing didn’t enslave blacks, it freed them. Communism didn't save China from starvation, it prolonged the starvation in China. Democrats aren’t “for the working man.” Democrats despise capitalism, and so work to crush business, which reduces wages, benefits and the number of private sector jobs. (Socialists prefer government jobs to private sector jobs). And JFK, supposedly the young god of the Democrats, couldn’t win a primary in his party, today. The general election, he could win, because Republicans would love him. But, the party primary? Not a chance. He would be despised even by the Democrats who made this loving PBS program about him. Besides joining the long "radical" Republican battle for civil rights, JFK sent troops to fight communism in foreign lands, strengthened the military and called for large tax cuts to revive a sagging economy.

The breaking news about JFK is that even though I never met the man, I knew him. And the present crop of Democrats in congress, in the primary race and in the media, including PBS, are no JFKs."

Kudos, Larry Leonard!

Very good article. I'd just like to expand on this point if I may.

Bob Schieffer of CBS, said on this program that the media first thought that Kennedy was killed by a right wing nut, but that Oswald turned out to be a very left wing nut.

He certainly was. Lee Harvey Oswald was a Communist active in pro-Castro groups like the Fair Play for Cuba Committee. He actually defected to the Soviet Union and lived there for a few years. He hated Jack Kennedy because of his confrontations with Castro and Khrushchev. He was in no possible sense a right-winger, a quality he shared with Bobby Kennedy's Palestinian assassin Sirhan Bishara Sirhan, who hated Bobby Kennedy for his support of Israel in the 1968 Democratic presidential primaries. It is positively Orwellian, to borrow the adjective Mr. Leonard uses, how leftist jounalists and historians ignore these facts as they recount to the young and the ignorant how the 1960s assassinations were the product of an intolerant racist America.

...the media first thought that Kennedy was killed by a right wing nut, but that Oswald turned out to be a very left wing nut. That is a perfect description of today's mainstream media, too.

...Slavery in America was ended in the North, by Republicans. It lasted longest in places where Democrats ruled, but the Republicans eventually finished it there, too. Jim Crow was invented by Democrats. The K.K.K in America was a Democrat organization.

Democrats opposed the 14th Amendment, and The Civil Rights Act of 1866 and of 1964...

Every single advance by black Americans from the end of slavery to the end of Jim Crow to calling out the National Guard to protect Rosa Parks was the direct result of actions by Republicans...(Oregon Magazine - Larry Leonard)

This is a fine article, but early on we find a mention of "Charleton Heston."

I know Mr. Heston, and he is a great American and there is no "e" in the middle of his first name. Call me a stickler (actually, I'm an editor), but when a goof like this pops up in the first couple of paragraphs of a piece, the rest of it loses the impact it should have.

Proper spelling and grammar make an impression on people everywhere; oftimes they are put off by finding some glaring error, and the point of the piece they are reading becomes diminished. And that's a shame, because a lot of them are good pieces, like this one.

Not meaning to nitpick, but I know I speak for lots of FReepers when I say one of the time-honored axioms of good journalism is "get it right."

Also, Mr. Heston deserves whatever courtesies we can give him. He has been exemplary in a host of good causes.

End of rant!

....and called for large tax cuts to revive a sagging economy. JFK:

"If government is to retain the confidence of the people, it must not spend a penny more than can be justified on grounds of national need, and spent with maximum efficiency. The final and best means of strengthening demand among consumers and business is to reduce the burden on private income and the deterrence to private initiative which are imposed by our present tax system. It is a paradoxical truth that tax rates are too high today and tax revenues are too low – and the soundest way to raise revenues in the long run is to cut rates now".

Ping!

When President Bush pushed tax cuts at the beginning of his administration, remember how Ted Kennedy screamed and went into overdrive? He asked how Bush DARED to use JFK's name in ads, reminding people that JFK had cut taxes BIG TIME....and insisted they be PERMANENT!

The Democrats prefer to draw the veil of "Camelot"....a fairy tale aura over JFK, rather than ever admit the truths about him. I think they'd even rather we remember the womanizing rather than the tax-cutting about JFK!

The day the Berlin Wall fell is a day each & every person will live to regret; &, I believe the regret will come rather soon, at that.

Consider: Before it fell? All one ever needed to do should a question of who was being lied to arise, was to look across that wall & into the "Worker's Paradise."
Made ideological arguments quite short, sweet & very moot to all, including "Democrats."

A *little* harder to do these days, now that the wall's gone, huh?
How much longer before the mere mention of that wall & all it meant will be met by blank stares & suspicious glances? :o)

Back on point, talking about LL's assertions concerning civil rights, and, who should & shouldn't recieve credit?

I'd bet LL realizes the mindset responsible for the long gone wall & the mindset now running the nation's universities, teaching our kids, writing today's headlines, and in charge of recording what'll be our official history?
They are one & the same.
To a large degree this has been made possible thanks to that wall's demise so I guess it could be said when their wall fell, our wall went up.
~eh?

But aside from all that, never forget there's something else governing above all else here, too. Something we've all heard many times uttered in matters of righteousness et al.

..."Let no good deed go unpunished."

Excellent points!

Horowitz is doing a pretty good job of attacking them in academia, anyway.

The tax rates in JFK's time were quite a bit higher than they are now, so the call to lower taxes now doesn't have quite as much justification as then.

Okay. You liked it --- I'll read it later. I've still got a very sick little girl. Her recovery was all too brief.
