[history]
The state Senate moved to fulfill one of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's campaign promises Monday, voting to repeal a bill that would have allowed 2 million illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses starting Jan. 1.
The overwhelming vote to repeal the law came after the measure's author met with Schwarzenegger and decided to endorse the repeal in exchange for cooperation on a new measure. Quick action is expected by the Assembly, and the bill repealing the law is likely to hit Schwarzenegger's desk next week.

What part of "illegal" do these people not understand?
To: hotpotato
I think the headline is inaccurate. The Senate action alone does not void the bill, but it's a great start.

Undocumented workers might just be taking a company supplied bus in the future.
These companies using illegals will just have to pick up some the tab. Of course, they'll certainly take it out of their wages (double).

Schwarzenegger would look at a new bill "provided it addresses the security concerns around driver-license integrity and links licenses to insurance," Sollitto said. This is troubling. Sounds like Arnold would support a substitute law that, subject to a few tweaks, would give licence's to illegals.

A lot of these 'migrants' do not have driver licenses in their home countries and have the most minimal of skill behind the wheel. Camageddon!

"
I want to remind people that we're all going to be sitting down to our Thanksgiving tables, and the people who picked the food and took care of the turkeys that are going to be on our table, many of those are undocumented workers," she said. "The least we can do is guarantee that they will have a right to drive to their jobs so they can put food on their table for their families."
I want to remind those without common sense to realize, those "who picked the food and took care of the turkeys that are going to be on our table, many of those are undocumented workers," are illegaliens - criminals, and those who give aid and comfort are also breaking the law.
The least we can do is not encourage their continued illegal conduct by affording them yet one more benefit. What we should provide them is a guarantee that an application for a D.L., an arrest for traffic violations, the purchase of alcoholic beverages, opening of bank or savings accounts, applications for birth certificates, applications to schools, or hospital care without identification as a documented immigrant (same forms of ID's as required by citizens) will lead to reporting to the INS and subsequently deportation.
We should also stiffen the penalties for giving aid and comfort to illegaliens and enforce the laws, fully - even to the point of closing down the businesses of serious offenders.

I think they should still go ahead with an initiative on this and end it once and for all (at least until the courts invalidate the iniative).

"The least we can do is guarantee that they will have a right to drive to their jobs so they can put food on their table for their families." The least we can do is politely escort them back to their own country. I have a lot of trouble believing illegal immigrants (excuse me, 'undocumented workers') are too stupid to not understand they are breaking the law, but then Democrats tend to have that attitude.

Thanks for asking that...I STILL can't figure out how 'illegals' can get ANYTHING legitimate in this country!
