There are THOUSANDS of unidentified remains at CILHI waiting to have forensic studies done. I'm not sure where this figure of "a hundred" comes from, but it sems pretty low to me.

Bump to follow up on this one... we have a friend who's a dentist there (CILHI, now known as JPAC). Somehow "thousands" seems wayyyy high.

Since when does the fact that someone is dead make them beyond reproach? When I am told that he did in fact die in the line of duty I will accept the full honors for him. But as long as no body is saying that I can only say that he does not deserve honors.

Smacking Dean upside the head on the issues is fine. Family, however, should be off limits even under these trying circumstances.

Normally I would agree with you. But if the charges that Dean used his political influence to have his non-military brother bumped ahead of those who served this nation, then this should be brought to the fore. Moreover, why should a civilian be given a burial with military honors when they did not die in service to this nation?

This matter merits further investigation. If confirmed, it should be seriously considered as an abuse of authority.

Thank you for posting this reality: ANYTIME a CIA operative is killed, they have a star placed in the lobby of the Langley HQ. Their name is inscribed in a book that lists their vitals. NSA has a similiar way to honor Naval Security and ASA personnel killed in the line of duty.

Now lets throw another touch of possible reality in this mix. Talk to any Marine Sniper assigned to LARP patrol in Nam or this area. Any white guy seen in those areas and in particuliar seen with a local communist became a prime target for any sniper. The white guy was assumed to be a Russian, a Euro merc, probably French or an American Traitor. The white guy/guys were popped and no questions were asked. Some of our Marine snipers were so good at this, the Russian had bounties on their heads.

Pretty much if the CIA thinks your cover is important enough to keep secret, so ti shall be. Even in Death. This is not secret but a PR event. If there is truth to Dean as an agent the brass will say it. Also, honors are at the President's (or SECDEF?) discretion, correct? The CIA is divulging the use of CIA "contractors" and their deaths. Spann would have been secret only those damn TV cameras got in the way. He never would have been the martyr he is. His wife's check from the gov't is probably larger cuz of it too? Any takers?

Yes, and I believe that I stated pretty much the same argument at least twice on this thread. DRUDGE may be wrong, this may be just the normal procedure for any remains that are received at CILHI, etc etc.

I am not really convinced that Dean is to be "buried with ful military honors"- I think this may be a misinterpretation of what is going on.

I was commenting more on the wild speculation that the hippie Dean was actually a "CIA Agent"- but I have said all I have to say on that subject.

I think the burden of proof is on those who want to show that this burial is unwarranted. And in view of the obvious possibility that Dean's brother was CIA, I don't think they'll be able to prove it is unwarranted. That being the case, I think complaints are inappropriate.

The article doesn't say that. It's unclear at this point who "pressured" JPAC. All I'm saying is wait until all the facts are known before passing judgement.

Actually, on the number of remains, I posted the CILHI website... go to town. Call 'em up and ask them; maybe they'll tell you. ISTR that there's about 160-170 from the Vietnam war. Most of the WWII remains they have are plane crashes, so that they will know who they are trying to ID from the machine's serial number (if it's not legible, they can usually track serial numbered equipment like weapons, radios, engines).

The Air Force has a database with every plane they are missing in it. (Ditto the USN/USMC). What's more interesting to us, maybe, a hobbyist named Joe Baugher put together something even the services didn't have -- a listing of every serial number of every plane they've ever flown. You can find it on the net (just Google his name).

For extra credit, my real name appears on at least one of his pages. (grin).

...In all there were four coffinlike containers removed from the C-130 cargo jet that had arrived from Laos, via Guam, on Tuesday. One other set of remains was believed to be those of Neil Sharman, an Australian who had been traveling with Charlie Dean. The others were believed to be those of airmen.

Though Charlie Dean and his friend were civilians, they were given military honors, officials said, on the chance that the remains include those of service members missing in the Vietnam War.

"We don't know who we have until the lab says who we have," said Lieutenant Colonel Gerald O'Hara, a spokesman for the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command, which runs the international recovery missions and the forensic laboratory here. "Ninety-eight percent of the missing from this war were service members. We're treating everyone as if they could be a service member."

O'Hara said DNA testing to confirm the identity could take up to eight months, although family members were confident because of the personal items found with the bones. Eventually, the Dean family plans a burial under the Sag Harbor, New York, cemetery marker laid for Charlie two years ago, according to the wishes expressed in the will of his late father, who never spoke of his son's death after 1975.
