One has to wonder what kind of a "TREK" this was. Was it an innocent vacation by 2 kids who didn't realize how dangerous that part of the world was at that time? Or was it more on the lines of a sean penn fact finding mission.

If Dean really wants the southern hillbilly vote, maybe he should have his, not too bright, brothers coffin draped in the Confederate Flag.
To: adam_az
They should have buried Mary Jo Kopechne with full military honors. She gave her life so the country wouldn't have to endure a Ted Kennedy presidency.

Was Dean's brother ever in the military?

I read somewhere that Dean's brother was with the CIA or another defense related agency and was working for our armed forces when he was executed. I could be wrong about this, but it would explain the military honors. Yes. There was some question about that for a long time, but the military wouldn't say anything, not even to the family. I guess this cinches it.

His brother was not a soldier. He does not deserve military honors. If he was never a soldier, then I fail to see why he is getting Military honors
And I can also understand completely why the soldiers are ticked off

"...maybe he should have his, not too bright, brothers coffin..."
What a shallow, spiteful comment. Did you know his brother and specific information concerning his intelligence that you can say that?
And at thanksgiving no less. Have a happy holiday.

This guy was a draft dodging anti-war activist who sought to develop as much anti-America material as he possibly could! Why would we show him any national courtesy?

Dean is looking for a flag-draped photo opportunity.Am I missing something? I thought that the Republican party was in control of the government. Who is the Secretary of Defense? As far as I know, Dean is not even in any state government right now, let alone the federal government. If this is a photo opportunity, it is being arranged under the guidance of the Republican party. Dean would not have a say one way or the other as to how any ceremonies would go.

Was Dean's brother ever in the military?
No, he was going to join the Peace Corps but put it on hold to work on the George McGovern campaign instead.

CIA, unless they were in the military, active, reserve, retired are not afforded Military Honors, This also applies to civilian contract workers, etc. Only those with military ties and certain politicians are afforded such honors. Anyone else would require congressional approval, following a request to the DOD.

During the Vietnam War, Dean's brother and an Australian friend treked into Laos as civilians -- and were captured by the Vietcong and killed.Civilians, my ass. If they're getting military honors, it means they were CIA.

Family, however, should be off limitsYes, it is shameful that Dean is using his deceased brother a campaign prop.
