SCAM AUTHOR TO SIGN AT LOCAL BARNES AND NOBLE
Book signing with Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson set for December 4 in Westwood
(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) November 26, 2003 Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, founder and president of Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny (BOND) will be signing copies of his new book Scam: How the Black Leadership Exploits Black America, on Thursday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Barnes and Noble in Westside Pavillion, located at 10850 West Pico Blvd. in Westwood. The store may be reached at 310-475-4144.
In this newest book, Peterson, an outspoken critic of the black leadership establishment takes on black leaders, challenges the welfare system, and offers solutions for overcoming poverty and powerlessness in our nation. The civil rights establishment, contends Peterson, has made a career off the downturn of Americas inner city, promising solutions, but offering only Band-Aid answers. Instead, Petersons is a platform of empowerment, teaching individuals and families how to tap into the power within, rather than depending on handouts.
Peterson is founder and President of the national nonprofit organization BOND, the Brotherhood of Organization of a New Destiny and a sought after speaker on a wide variety of political topics. He is also host of the nationally syndicated radio show The Jesse Lee Peterson Show and a television show which airs nationally, as well as being a frequent guest on major TV networks such as Fox, CNN, and MSNBC. In addition, Peterson is an advisory board member for Project 21, a national black conservative public policy organization, and a board member of the California Christian Coalition.
He has recently appeared on Hannity and Colmes, Sean Hannity Radio, Mancows Morning Madhouse, The Martha Zoller Show and was profiled in the pages of Human Events

Come and meet the 'real Rev. Jesse!
Ok, someone tell us when the carpools leave!

Dear Rev. Peterson,
Very few times in the course of my extensive reading and hobby of book collecting, am I moved to do anything more than just start a book that I buy, and if time allows and the book is somewhat engrossing, to perhaps finish it. As a 20-year-old college student, time is more of an enemy than a friend. Of my 500 books, I have perhaps read 20 from cover to cover, as I am more of a collector of books then a reader. Allow me to introduce to you how your book, Scam, is one, that after an hour read, had me take in every word you wrote, [and] will be in my collection permanently.
I was at Barnes & Noble shopping for a Clinton book written by National Review editor Rich Lowry. It is rare for me to pay full cover price, approximately $28 in this case, but my love for his magazine and view of his subject convinced me that it would be well worth it. On a bookcase over on a top shelf laid a book I had never heard of by a man, you, whom I was unfamiliar with. The subject at hand, How Black Leadership Exploits Black America, was appealing on a few fronts: First, as a reader of the recommended Timmerman biography on Jesse Jackson, I was made aware, for the first time, how bad the situation of black America was and how those like Jackson benefit from it. So as a Timmerman fan and loather of Jackson, I was engaged to explore other books of the field that preached in a Timmerman voice. I could not find one. Sadly, your first book never crossed my path during that search and the closest I ever came was Steeles Content of Character, also referenced in Scam. But while some parts were agreeable with me, on the whole it did not have me read on the topic what I thought needed to be said.
When I thought the end was over, as God had me look up and away from my original location, he [showed] me see a blazing picture of Jesse Jackson. Now that usually would have sent me running for the hills, but right above the picture was the word Scam, which sent my mind racing. Had I, after my long and exhausting search, now, found the book I had begun to fear didnt exist? Then I noticed the author, a Rev. Jesse Peterson and his picture. I began to worry. A black preacher with another black preacher on the cover of his book? Though the titles seemed contradictory, I made the mistake of putting the two together and then discarding the book. As I did that, I glanced once more at the back cover and read things like Affirmative Action--A substitute for Character and calling reparations Absolutely Shameful. I was confused: this was said in this book by this black man with Jesse Jackson on the cover?
Because of time, I made a risky choice of buying the book. My eyes had seen too many of these books that felt as if Jesse Jackson was the ghostwriter and never again would I waste a dime on such a book that conveys a wasteful message. I began reading your book when I got home just to see the mess I had gotten myself into. Surly, like the rest, I had been tricked. It was only recently that I found Timmermans book, and never thought to think there might be another one out there that conveys a similar message. From page 1 to 213, I read every page, every note and cried over there not being an index (something I love very much in books) and sat there. Sat there, thinking that I had finally found a man, a black man, who doesnt speak to me, the white man, as anything more than equal. There was not one page of this book that went unread or one fact that I shall disagree with. Even your conclusions telling your advice of the 10 ways of improvement would exactly be what I would outline if I was to write a related book.
To me, it is certainly the best book on race and African Americans I have ever read and certainly should be commended as one of the best books of the year. Your facts are dead on, conclusions crystal clear and methods are simple and instructive.
My reading of this book will hopefully put me in the field of one in the millions who have and will use this book, read this book over and over, and look to it for guidance and instruction on the issue. Never again will I talk on the issues of Black America and Black Leadership without mentioning this book. Thank you for your honesty and bluntness, clear and concise solutions, and making this the best $20 I have spent on a book. It literally has changed my life.
May God continue to bless you, as he does me, and your family. With his love, I know we will persevere.
