BOSTON - Sail Boston, the visit by tall ships that has drawn millions of spectators in the past, has been scuttled for next year so the city can focus on the Democratic National Convention.
The event's board acceded to a request from Mayor Thomas Menino, who was concerned the event, planned for July 10-15, would be a drain on city services so close to the convention, set for July 26-29.
Sail Boston said it plans to hold the event in a subsequent year at "a more appropriate time."
Sail Boston 2000, the last such extravaganza, drew 2 million visitors to the waterfront. Organizers had said Sail Boston 2004 was to be a scaled-down event confined to Massachusetts Port Authority property near the Boston Fish Pier.
No more than 10 or 12 of the big, picturesque sailing ships were being booked for the event, with about 500,000 visitors expected over six days.
Menino said the 2000 event cost the city $2 million in police overtime, security and other costs.
"We just don't have that money this year," he said.

If they had any sense, they would tell the DNC to find a new venue, and keep the visit by the tall ships. National political conventions are a nineteenth century relic, made obsolete by advances in communications technology. Now, they are a waste of airtime and little more than terrorist magnets.

Send it to Norfolk/Hampton Roads. They did a great job with Opsail 2000.

I thought you were going to say Ted could make his grand entrance, spouting mist from the blowhole on the top of his head.
I think the city of Boston made the right decision. I mean, really, what else says summer fun in Boston like sitting indoors, listening to a bunch of babbling fools foaming at the mouth about what bastards Dubya and the Republicans are? Hmmmm-mmmm.

Well, the could combine the events. I'd pay to see Tom Daschle keelhauled and Bill Clinton hung from the yardarm.

Boston has also had the Boston Tea Party ship in drydock for years....they say they can't afford the $ to fix it. Seems to me this icon of American history would be a priority of Boston's. But, no, funding for gay marriage policies are highter priority these days.

Actually, it's a security precaution so they can float Hillary & Teddy into Boston Harbor...I hope you're not right. My family has oceanfront property north of town and I don't think we have flood insurance for that.

What's the matter?
Can't those elitist "know it alls" in Boston, chew gum and walk at the same time?
I would suspect that they were far more concerned that the limited attention capabilities of democrats would be strained by two events in two months...
Jeeeeze - what a bum decision..
