Hillary to Troops: Support for War Fading

In a demoralizing message to U.S. soldiers serving in Iraq, visiting New York Sen. Hillary Clinton told them that Americans back home are growing increasingly skeptical of President Bush's decision to send them into battle.

Describing two meetings with G.I.s over turkey dinners in Baghdad, Sen. Clinton told reporters later that soldiers wanted to know "how the people at home feel about what we are doing."

Clinton said she told the troops, "Americans are wholeheartedly proud of what you are doing but there are many questions at home about the (Bush) administration's policies."

She also suggested that the U.S. could eventually loose the war in Iraq, contending, "We have to exert all of our efforts militarily, but the outcome is not assured."

Despite her sour pronouncements, the former first lady insisted that the soldiers were just as glad to see her as they were President Bush, whose surprise visit less than 24-hours earlier was greeted with standing ovations.

"It's a positive for the commander-in-chief to visit troops in the field," Clinton told reporters, adding, "the troops [also] seemed to appreciate seeing myself."

Speaking from a secure location just over the Kuwaiti border, Mrs. Clinton launched one verbal salvo after another at the White House, arguing that Bush officials had been "obsessed" with getting Saddam Hussein and saying the perception blinded them to the difficulties of deposing his regime.

"The Pentagon tried to make do with as few troops as possible, as light a footprint as they could get away with," Clinton said. "Now, we're playing catchup . . . Unfortunately, I don't think they fully appreciated the conditions we would encounter."

The top Democrat also reprised her charge that the White House is being less than candid when it comes to apprising the American people of the costs of the war.

"The obstacles and problems here are much greater than the administration usually admits to," she said, adding, "Everybody has to be honest."

Several folks pinged me to this thread, and I just got the messages since I am still out of town enjoying an overdose of turkey.

I saw exactly one report of Clinton (her) in Iraq before the President Bush / Iraq story broke. After that, she disappeared from public view all day Thursday, and did not reappear from under her wet rock until a brief TV clip on Friday.

Not only did Bush drive her out of the media, notice the contrast in the receptions that these two elected officials received from the troops on the ground. (The national media were careful not to mention this, but the visuals and audio told the story without any commentary.) The contrast was this:

The troops showed their enthusiasm for Bush as someone who understands, respects and supports their mission, by cheering as soon as he entered the room. The troops showed their "enthusiasm" for Clinton (her) by not throwing food at her, like the cafeteria scene in Animal House. Notice that Bush interacted with all possible troops, whereas Clinton (her) targeted black soldiers in the 10th Mountain Division (based in New York?), which gave her the best chance to find a few individuals who would take her seriously. From the appearance on their faces and their body English, even this targeted group did not like her.

Bottom line: FReepers should spit on Clinton (her) -- figuratively of course -- to provide for her the reception that the American troops were thinking, but were too polite by training to do. She needs it, she earned it, we should do it.

I think Bush is sincere in his agenda, I just think that agenda is totally wrong. Having said that, nothing will stop me from joining with other's to rid our nation of the terrible threat this she creature poses to our nation.

We need to be more activist, even if that means demonstrations. We are so use to convienence, but, we cannot phone in and place an order for a more conservative nation like ordering a pizza. It's going to cost us something.

I don't know if everyone felt as funny as I did parking my car, pulling my home made sign out of the back and walking over to a group of strangers to protest the 2000 election.


Before I reached them, two couples stopped me to read my sign and showed their disbelief and displeasure that I , a conservative ordinary looking American type, was taking to the streets. It's just not done in polite society. This type of thing is left for liberals, minorities, anarchists, and radicals. What's a everyday housewife think she's doing making a spectacle out of herself on a public street?

That was the most defining day, not only my life, but the other's present there. Things had gotten so bad in this nation that the average joe was taking to the streets in cities across the nation. I'm sure it frightened everyone from the media who ignored us while no doubt having long conversations about what this new development means, to the heads of the DNC.

Fox News sprang into being and the ripples began to spread. When Bush won the election we do what we always do, get lazy and complacent, go back to business as usual, but we cannot afford to do that. 2008 is going to be upon us in a heart beat, and we have a limited amount of time to insure that this she creature will not be running for anything but cover. If our elected representatives will not respond to us, then we do need to get back to rally's and demonstrations.

There is nothing more frightening to see than the working class, backbone of the nation, up in arms over an issue, they are not use to seeing it in D.C. or the media. It is certainly something they need to see far more often if we are to avoid either destruction or a civil war.
