U.S.-led coalition to distribute 200,000 radios in Afghanistan

ASSOCIATED PRESS

BAGRAM, Afghanistan, Nov. 29 — The U.S.-led coalition will distribute more than 200,000 shortwave radios to people across Afghanistan, the U.S. military said Saturday.

''Truth is one of the most effective weapons against the terrorists and anti-coalition forces that are attempting to reinfect Afghanistan,'' spokesman Maj. Bryan Hilferty told a news briefing at the coalition headquarters at Bagram Air Base. The radios would be given to Afghans for free to allow them ''unfettered access to many sources of news,'' he said. Most of Afghanistan lacks a regular supply of electricity. Hilferty gave no further details about the cost of the radios or their distribution. The radios are powered by a crank. The announcement comes as the former ruling Taliban regime and its allies appear to be trying to undermine the U.S.-backed Afghan government and efforts to rebuild the war-battered country.

We should have the most professional, entertaining and informative TV network up across the ME by now, but at least this is a start.

It's usually a mistake and destructive to a person's character to just give him a short-wave radio. It would be a better investment to teach each of them to make a short-wave radio.

Imagine how the thinking of the next generation of Afghani children will be altered when they can grow up listening to whatever they want on the radio, going to school in a classroom furnished by the donations of everyday Americans, playing sports with equipment donated by American companies and being treated with medicines and by doctors from Western humanitarian organizations. We are changing the world for the better.

I've got a Baygen crank radio and I love it. I use it during the infrequent blackouts and don't have to worry about the batteries leaking all over.
