The date the time of the Newark Rebellion, Detroit had gone up a few minutes before, Watts two years before that. These were the most explosive, deadly and expensive outbursts of the Afro-American People for Self Determination and Democracy! THEY WERE NOT "RIOTS," THEY WERE REBELLIONS! (Just a few dance steps from REVOLUTION!)
What Black People have gained since those times of outright Racist Repression (e.g., the Mob directed corruption of the vicious Addonizio regime here in Newark) We thought had ended not only with the Rebellion as the downbeat of real change, but with the 1970 elections, The Community's Choice brought in a Black Mayor, Ken Gibson, the first of a major northeastern city, several black faces on the city council, and even the Kerner Commissions report of the US as "two separate societies, Black & White" setting the stage for change. The Civil Rights and Black Liberation/Black Power Movements did make substantive change, though Reagan, Bush1, And Clinton, now the maniacal greedy counterfeit president Bush 2, have all cut deeply into whatever gains we made. But in Newark we did think we had crossed certain "burning sands" and got to, at least, a plateau of internal Backwardness we thought yet was still less ugly than the ultra-left and infra-right revanchism that found Mayor Dinkins "too this" or "too that" which then let them have a real militant, the beast, Giuliani. And now, a real re-or de-former, Bloomberg.
WE SAY ALL THIS TO SAY THAT THE IGNORANT POTENTIALLY VIOLENT AND OBVIOUSLY REACTIONARY IDEA OF REPLACING POLICE DIRECTOR RANKIN WITH A SUSPECTED OR ALLEGED OR INVESTIGATED OR SPECULATED FELON WHO HEADS THE NEWARK POLICE BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION IS THE MOST ANTI-BLACK, ANTI-DEMOCRATIC NOTION TO BE ODORIZED THIS WAY IN A LONG TIME, AND IT MUST BE FOUGHT LIKE WE SHOULD BE FIGHTING BUSH 2, THE MAIN MANIAC.
To suggest that it is Black Police Director Rankin's " fault" for the intensifying violence in Newark, is to forget that Newark is in the World. And that this hideous escalation of crime and violence, corruption and deception has enveloped the entire world! Can we hold Rankin responsible for 911, Afghanistan, The Ethnic Cleansing Israel is attempting on the Palestinians, Iraq, Liberia, Congo...&C If there is a chief responsible it is Bush 2 and his coven of devil worshippers, but their enablers and supporters are all the Opportunists, Call Persons, Say Nothings, and Hiders, who will not speak out and oppose this outright motion of the US to Fascism! WE ASK ALL WHO HAVE MINDS OR HEARTS OR INFORMATION OR COJONES TO JOIN US IN DEMANDING** THAT SHARPE JAMES, MAYOR OF NEWARK, ALLOW POLICE DIRECTOR RANKIN TO DO HIS JOB, AND RESIGN BEFORE HE WOULD APPOINT AN IMPERIALE THROWBACK LIKE Police Benevolent Association mini-Fuhrer ROCCO MALANGA, OR EVEN A LITE VERSION OF THIS LIKE SANTIAGO, TO TAKE OVER THE NEWARK POLICE DEPARTMENT. Is Sharpe James going to allow the same combination of invisible payoffs, oldboy connection and corruption and Gov McGreevey-like lack of courage to send Newark back to the era of GIULIANI-LIKE POLICE BRUTALITY & THE PREDICTABLE RESPONSE OF MASS VIOLENCE TO SUCH RE INCARNATION OF OVERT NATIONAL OPPRESSION AND RACISM.. MALANGA HAS BEEN A HISTORIC CARRIER OF THESE DEADLY SOCIAL POISONS!
TO DO THIS WOULD PITCH NEWARK BACK TOWARD 1967, AND THIS TIME IT WOULD NOT BE JUST BLACK AGAINST WHITE (IT NEVER REALLY WAS) BUT DEMOCRACY VERSUS OPPORTUNISM AND A RETROGRADE VERSION OF FASCISM LITE! WE CAN NOT PERMIT IT!!

I have been to Newark and this is statement is questionable.

As someone who sat in one of your classes at Rutgers, Mr. Baraka, let me say that Dinkins lost to Giuliani because Dinkins let a black mob run through Crown Heights shouting "Kill the Jews!". Thanks to that little "rebellion", I don't think New York City will see another black mayor in your, or my, lifetime unless he is a law and order Republican, which you would no doubt disapprove of.
As for Newark, if you really believe Sharpe James has the best interest of his citizens in mind, then I really do want to know what you did with the nice man who taught that class at Rutgers. He was a little kooky but not outright insane.
