Lawmaker upset over marijuana subway ads

WASHINGTON, Dec. 3 (UPI) -- An Oklahoma congressman is so upset over a subway ad for legalized marijuana he wants to cut the federal government's annual payment to the Metro system.

Change the Climate Inc. has been using public service advertising space on the Metro since 2001, the Washington Post reported Wednesday, but it was the latest round of advertising, this fall that drew the ire of Rep. Ernest J. Istook Jr., R-Okla.

This week, Istook inserted into a bill language that would cut Metro's funds by $92,500 and prohibit any transit system that receives federal funds from advocating decriminalization of marijuana.

My family and I will be using the metro this weekend. Personally I would prefer it if my kids didn’t have to walk through hallways with “Better Sex” signs plastered on the walls. It’s distasteful and classless. (It’s like klintoon all over again.)

This extortion thing is a bit over the top. The Repubs have bigger axes to grind and spines to find.

I'm all for taxing and regulating marijuana, but these ads were just stupid and irresponsible. What were those idiots thinking? Why would they want to put up ads glamorizing marijuana? Why would they want to encourage people to smoke it? Ads like that will only be used against people trying to legalize marijuana. We certainly don't need to be encouraging people to smoke the stuff. That's like those milk commercials put out to help the dairy industry. The marijuana industry doesn't need that kind of help. Marijuana tends to sell itself.

Neither do I. I see it as lying.

There are those on this board who say they don't do recreational drugs, but would like to see those drugs legalized. Furthermore, these same people profess not to be promoting the use of drugs, just their legalization (like there's a big difference).

Now, here's an advertisement not just for legalizing drugs but actually encouraging their use and, with the exception of TKDietz, the sound of crickets (at best) and outright support of the ad.

AFAIAC, and I have made this point repeatedly, the use of marijuana should fall beneath the government's radar - infra dignitatum, as it were.

I do not need pinch-faced, finger-wagging whited sepulchers advising me how to live my life.

I encourage all young people I know to see through the smarmy rationales of the various breeds of utopian world-improvers, including so-called Conservatives - they are all implicitly Socialists.

I think the ad is funny - of course, I was an early fan of MAD magazine, and continue to favor anti-Establishment humor, such as South Park, The Simpsons', and Dennis Miller.

I believe in allowing a person to purchase 30,000 calories worth of groceries in a single day. Does that mean there's no difference between that and promoting obesity? Where the weed cops start, the fat cops will follow.
