Boycott planned over license bill Protest organizers ask Latinos not to shop or work on Dec. 12

The word is getting around. Wendy Garcia, 19, is neither going to work nor going shopping on Friday, Dec. 12. Ditto for Ana Flores, 46, and Reynaldo Guzman, 32.

These Latino immigrants -- angered by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's repeal on Wednesday of the driver's license bill that would have given illegal immigrants the right to drive -- will participate in a planned "boycott": a one-day economic strike in which Latinos are encouraged to not go to work, school or buy anything.

"He's an immigrant, too, right?"

Yes. That's right. But you, dear, are an ILLEGAL immigrant.

She said with a shrug, "If Latinos don't help each other, who will?"

Ah, the mask slips a bit. It's not about supporting immigrants, but about supporting La Raza. Hey, if you ruin the ecology of the border areas, no matter right? If a sovereign state wants to limit immigration, no problem right?

Are they not getting it, that this is not about Latinos(though that is a big part of the problem) but about illegals in general??!!

December 13 - massive hiring effort cuts California unemployment for legal workers.

Could they survive without their Latino employees?

If they do, this would pretty much take the wind out of the sails of those that claim that illegals are actually a benefit to the economy. Might also be a good time for non-latinos to do some job hunting.

I'll tell you what, Mr. and Mrs. and Ms. and Master Illegals: I'll take a day off work next week, drive up, and transport you and yours to Mexico where I am certain you all will receive much fairer and kinder treatment from Vicente Fox. Perhaps he'll even provide free food and beds and medical care for you as we sucker taxpayers here in America do.

Just holler when you're ready!
Best regards, sarcasm.

Since the word "Latino" is masculine, does this mean the "Latinas" (which is feminine) can still shop on December 12?

"they tellus, you're an American"

Well, sweetie, you either are or you are not an American and if you are, then get in the line for your drivers license as a LEGAL resident.

As a Brit I'm very confused by this so please be patient with me. Why doesn't this lady just apply for citizenship?

If the brilliant writer of this sceed cared to dig a little deeper he/she may find that these "latinas y latinos" don't have jobs and their welfare checks don't arrive until the 15th anyway.

"Why doesn't this lady just apply for citizenship?"

It is not that easy to get legal US citizenship. On top of whatever actual restrictions exist one must deal with a typically stupid, inefficient, bumbling beauracracy. It is comparatively easy to just float in either over the Mexican or Canadian border, or via a tourist or student visa, and just stay put illegally.

The immigration laws in this country are a mess, in terms of both content and enforcement. They serve nobody well, except those folks who desire to break them.

I heard yesterday, on NPR!, that the penalty for smuggling people across the border is 5 MONTHS in jail. So now in Arizona drug runners are becoming "coyotes" (that's what they call them, right? not too flattering a term), since the penality is so much lower.

Let's change that law first.

This is the Federal Government, worrying whether some third grader got breakfast today, and failing in its PRIMARY task.

Because that has to be done from outside the borders with a legitimate reason and some kind of value to our society. She has neither.

Many thanks for your replies. The next question which begs itself is "Why don't they ship her out" but I guess that's answered by saying that the immigration laws are in a mess.

It seems incredible that you can't just ship these people out though. We have problems removing illegal immigrants here in the UK too, mostly because they come here illegally, then claim "Asylum" from whatever hell hole they came from. It is quite difficult to refuse asylum to someone from Nigeria or Afghanistan who claims to be fleeing persecution. It pulls at your heartstrings. I don't think we'd have any qualms about shipping Mexicans out though. At least, I hope not.

"Why don't they ship her out"

Well, they have to find her first. That would imply some brush with the law or such. And the area is flush with illegals and legals. Sorting them out would take quite awhile.

Hehe, well this Ana Flores seems a good place to start. She's cocking a snook by complaining about not getting a driving licence _despite_ being an illegal immigrant. The sheer nerve of it!! You'd have thought they'd keep their mouths shut and their heads down.

As for the subject of the article, which implies that legal immigrants should show some solidarity with these illegals, I can't believe that anyone would buy it. If I had gone to the hassle of applying legally to enter a country, and been accepted, the last thing I would want is a bunch of illegal immigrants running around. I would be the first to shop them.

Would it be possible to ask them to take their boycott over the border? That would help us out a lot. Just go over the border to do all your shopping that day and we'll be sure to check and make sure that you have a legal right to be here when you try to cross back.

Better yet we could ask all the employers to just call in if any of their employees call off. They could report the employees as possible illegal aliens who may be using fradulent identification to remain in the states.
