Dems Say GOP Exploiting 9-11 Attacks

Democratic leaders accused Republicans on Thursday of exploiting Sept. 11 by holding their presidential convention in New York less than two weeks before the third anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

"All indications are that the Republicans have gone to New York to exploit a terrible moment in our country," Rod O'Connor, chief executive officer of the Democratic National Convention Committee, told hundreds of journalists who came to tour the site of next summer's convention. "We are here to re-ignite a movement in our country."

Democratic National Committee (news - web sites) Chairman Terry McAuliffe echoed the charge in interviews with reporters.

The Republicans begin their gathering in New York on Aug. 30 — later than most nominating conventions — and end it on Sept. 2, nine days before the third anniversary of the attacks.

Organizers of the Republican convention did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

Democratic leaders ridiculed the Republicans' canceled plan to house some convention guests on a luxury cruise ship rather than at a New York hotel. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay dropped the plan after city leaders and labor groups protested.

"The American people want to hear about our plans for the economy, for health care, for education and for national security," said New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who will chair next July's convention in Boston. "The Republicans just care about holding their convention on a cruise ship."

We need an ad showing the Howard Dean - Diane Rhem interview. The voice over could go like this: "Listen to this and ask yourself. Where do Democrats get off accusing US of exploiting 9-11?"

"All indications are that the Republicans have gone to New York to exploit a terrible moment in our country," Rod O'Connor

I'm far too young to remember, but did Woodrow Wilson use the situation in Europe to his advantage at all in 1916?

Did FDR use the situation in Europe to his advantage in 1940? WW2 in 1944?

Did LBJ use Vietnam to his advantage in 1964?

"The American people want to hear about our plans for the economy, for health care, for education and for national security," said New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who will chair next July's convention in Boston. "The Republicans just care about holding their convention on a cruise ship."

That's the problem. The Democrat mantra for everything is "HIGHER TAXES, MORE MONEY!". Other than that, they have no ideas and no solutions! The last 30 years has shown that higher taxes and more money is not the solution. And the cruise ship would have been paid for by private donations. Democrats are just jealous.

Bill Richardson is a whine bag or is he a gas bag? I love it that the republican convention will held in NY.

Terry McAwful and et al...are only concern about ANY event that has excluded them...namely all news that has either GW and Dean's name in it.

Hell even Scott Peterson and Michael Jcakson are getting better press than the 9 dwarfs...

The DEMS are panic stricken due to the Clinton's weakening grasp on the Dems and controlling the news.

Next thing we will hear is that the Repubs and GW are exploiting the GOOD economy news...

The Dems are pathetic.

Translation: "We're miffed that because our Party is so full of appeasers that we can't exploit 9/11 ourselves."

I'm too young myself, but I think FDR used WW2 as the main reason he ran for a third and fourth term.

I think New Yorkers love it too. If the Dems were so concerned about the spin the GOP would put on their convention in NYC, the Dems should have had their convention in NYC as well. It's their own fault they're so stupid.

Thanks for the post. Hateful, miserable, perenially complaining democrats and liberals say anything in part because they know they lose--and they'll lose big next year.

OK, so Terry McAwful chose Boston over New York City, even before the GOP announced they were planning on holding their convention in New York City.

The way I see it, just more whining from the Democrats. If I was a Democrat, and thankfully I'm not, I'd be complaining my party is run by a punk and a rapist.
