Schwarzenegger Aims to Bypass Lawmakers
LA Times ^ | Dec. 7, 2003 | Peter Nicholas and Joe Mathews

SACRAMENTO — Rebuffed by state lawmakers in an early test of his administration, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will now try to bypass the Legislature whenever feasible and tap into the public support he commands by bringing his agenda directly to the ballot, administration aides said Saturday.

The governor, himself, remained publicly silent about Friday night's defeat of the state spending limit and $15 billion bond measure he had proposed. His aides, however, cast the votes as confirmation that the Legislature is ignoring the message of the Oct. 7th recall vote and the mandate they contend Schwarzenegger won.

That campaign would take to the ballot possibly more than a half-dozen measures sponsored by Schwarzenegger and various groups aligned with him. Included would be a constitutional amendment for a balanced budget and spending cap, and a package of changes in the state's workers compensation system, according to a Schwarzenegger adviser.

Wait! I thought Arnold was gonna roll over each time the Left barked. Isn't that what the principled true believers were telling us scant months back? Oh no! Must be a RINO plot!!

That's what that phoney conservative loser who ran against Arnold was hoping. It's nice to see McClintock splattered in Arnolds war on liberals. I guess it's fitting to call McClintock collateral damage :)

And we had to "vote for Perot because the GOP abandoned its base".

I did so and regretted it sorely the next day... and for eight long years... regretted it bitterly on 9/11...and still do.

That's why I so vehemently support and vote for the candidate "furthest to the right who can win"... it was a hard lesson.

Hard lesson ,hard learned. Where in PA?

Well, the funny part is that the Austrian Oak apparently did not work against Tom Thumb.Looks like McClintock worked against himself.

Amazing. You took my comments quite well. Kudos to you.

I'd fit right in at DU (That's a good one.) . LOL (Is dolt really the best you can do?)

Are you on the posse ping list, too?

Those who prize "victory" at any cost, may in the end, hopefully realize that in winning by foresaking basic common sense principle, they have only fought a stalling operation.

Do you not see what is happening here and all across this nation as the leftists work their sordid deeds on infiltration of all social instituions and destabilization of our way of living under the framework of the Constitution? Or is it just more fun to shoot arrows at those you don't understand for whatever reason or are too pure for your taste?

Are the demRats any less powerful today in sacramento? I know you follow the scene out here from your NC location and seem to enjoy being part of the new "in" crowd here at FR that says moderation is the only way to go, but when you start flapping your gums about ultrapurists, you do no one any service in posting such tripe.

Yes, it was fun this year doing the Nascar thread. Thanks. It was especially heartwarming to see the White House extend its open arms to all those who enjoy the action on and off the tracks. And enjoy Supporting Our Troops while doing it.

Meanwhile in Athens, tourists visit the Acropolis where in bygone days the government turned over to the rifraff failed to accomplish governernance and brought about failure.

Well, obviously I do, it exposes you for the death before victory type that you are.We had purists like you ensure we took a leap back into the 18th Century in our governors race. You and all of your idealogical soulmates act and sound like pouty teen aged girls. If it is not your way, you stamp your feet , name call and sulk. You are exhibiting this behavoir in spades.

The NASCAR thing was nice, too bad Dubya isn't pure enough .

xthen they quietly vote for the likes of Barbara Boxer

If a Freeper admitted to that, he or she should automatically receive a scarlet letter "B" attached to the screenname... it should be a lifelong point of public shame ;-)

I do so, constantly. I was in my mid-20's in 1992, had strong conservative (yep) principles but little actual knowledge of politics. Close friends who were more experienced bashed Bush Sr. endlessly, almost word for word what we are seeing today aimed at Bush, Jr. And we had to "vote for Perot because the GOP abandoned its base".

I did so and regretted it sorely the next day... and for eight long years... regretted it bitterly on 9/11...and still do.

Congratulations!! You've finally been hearded into the final box canyon!!

In a two party system, all that's left to do now is put an ULTRA ULTRA ULTRA socialist up for the dems, and an ULTRA ULTRA socialist up for the Pubs, and you'll vote for the ULTRA ULTRA socialist. After all, you don't want that ULTRA ULTRA ULTRA socialist!!!!!!!!

You go ahead and go gentle into that good night.

Now I know why the politicians call people sheeple.

This is why the 2-party system beats the fool out of parliamentary systems. In Germany, for example, if the looney-nut-tinfoil party gets 5% of the vote, they get 5% of the legislators. Here, you have to win a majority in a district to get anything. This means that the looneys get to speak, but they get nowhere near the levers of power. Sure, "real" conservatives like Harry Browne and Pat Buchannan will never be elected, but neither will fruitcakes like Ralph Nader or Howard Dean. It forces both sides to the middle. That's how we end up with Bubbas and W's instead of Mondales and Ron Pauls.

It sure isn't perfect, but it's incredibly stable. So stable, in fact, that we have had the longest run of peaceful transisitions of power in the world, with the exception of (maybe) Iceland.

Agreed. Though snow is handy for deterring gators and I've got lots to spare at the moment... shall I send you some? :-)
