"By that of course, I mean a unifying figure who can get elected; not someone who'll expand the central government's power over the states à la the first Lincoln."

I'll cast my vote for a Limbaugh/Hannity ticket until then I'm going Bush unless you can get someone better.

not at the moment.
at the moment, there is no viable third party. No third party has significant power bases in local, state, or federal government.
to vote for a third-party candidate for the presidency at the moment is exactly the same as not voting at all: there is absolutely NO CHANCE that candidate will win. In that perspective, the failure to vote for Bush subtracts one vote from his tally, which is the same as if a vote is added to the demonrat candidate.
I am no die-hard Dubyaite, but he beats ALL of the demonrat alternatives by a long mile.

BTW, Pro, the system is set up for a two party Presidential election. The person who gets 270 electoral votes wins. If you have a problem with that why don't you find Mr. Peabody and ask if you can use his wayback machine and chew out the Founding Fathers.

Incorrect Dearie. I can suggest some remedial reading if you like.

"...what do you think is the majority of the "GOP base"?
Probably the combined liberal and moderate republicans."
________________________________________

A "base" is defined as such because they are typically the strongest supporters of their own party because their views are farthest from the opposition. Liberal Republicans or Conservative Democrats are not the "base" of their respective parties because they most often cross party lines.

They keep promising them what they want to hear to get their vote but faili to deliver. That's becoming true of the republican party. They'll give lip service to some conservative ideals, but end up going with big government instead, because who else are the conservatives going to vote for?

That would be interpreted as a racist remark about racial matters whether or not it is. It would imply inferiority of a minority group....ask Rush about it if you don't agree with me.

"The illusion that some people are too stupid or evil to know the difference between George W. Bush and Dean/Clinton/Clark?"

I have been called a lot of things in my time on the earth. However, anyone that knows me know that I am not cowardice under fire (having been fired at a number of times, but never been fired). I agree that we should impeach/remove some judges and get conservative judges in. But, that will not happen if the Republicans in Congress do not turn back to their roots, get some balls and stand up to the libs.

When republican start ACTING like the majority party and stop leting the Dems push them around on issues of "God, Gun and Gays" (not to mention judges) THEN this may be valid. However, we need to have a lock on the politics on a local level too THEN we can talk about conservative lockstep.

ok,

"the failure to vote for Bush subtracts one vote from his tally"

This is where, from my limited logical point of view, the problem lies..........

The assumption that the vote in question "belongs" to the candidate in question.

It could be argued that all votes are up for grabs until the polls are closed.

Therefore, any one vote can only benefit it's recipient.

"Those who voted for Peort have no right to criticize the Clintons', IMO, since they indirectly helped his election."

Screw the people that didn't feel the first Bush met their needs and idealogies. They should be good little sheep when they pull the lever. Why would we ever want anyone to vote according to their own beliefs.

If we end up with a Dean presidency, there will only be one person to blame. His initials are GWB. I have consistently returned the RNC's begging letters with notes telling them I am not going to give a donation to a party that grows the federal government faster than any other president since the new deal.

I support GWB's forieng affairs policies. However, domestically he is a liberal!

Did you think that Bush had a good grasp on international issues before 9/11?
