WASHINGTON (AP) - The United States is helping Iraq establish an intelligence service whose primary mission will be to provide information for the fight against terrorism, the White House said Thursday.
Scott McClellan, the president's spokesman, said the idea originated among Iraqis several months ago, and they approached the United States seeking assistance.
"We are assisting them with their request," McClellan said. He did not provide details of the new program or say what it would cost.
"This is all part of a larger effort to continue working with the Iraqi people to turn more and more responsibility over to the Iraqi people for security in their own country,"McClellan said.
Great news. Our guys are good at cleaning up the bad guys, but have been having trouble with intelligence.
The Iraqis seem to have figured out how they could best help the US troops, and volunteered for duty.
I'd say this looks like they are not so afraid of Saddam any more, and do want to help the US finish the mission.
The odds for success in the short term (just a few years) get better all the time.
