I think this lady deserves a lot of respect for keeping this secret for so many years. It had to have been very difficult for her, knowing her father was a distinguished Governor, then United States Senator, and not being able to acknowledge that she was his daughter.
I would imagine that Sen. Thurmond is smiling down at her in pride.

Barf, zarf. Sounds to me like he tried to do an honorable thing.

I don't know what else they could do ... she looks more like Strom Thurmond than any woman should have to! But seriously, she's shown tremendous dignity, and I hope she does well for many more years.

Sounds to me like he tried to do an honorable thing. In what way did Strom do the honorable thing? Honorable would have been acknowledging his daughter 78 years ago and not running for President as a segregationist.

Barf, zarf. Sounds to me like he tried to do an honorable thing. So as long as a pedophile pays child support in secret, then the pedophile has done something honorable?
To: docmcb
I do not follow your reasoning.
In what way was he doing "an honorable thing"?
It does come off as a bit hypocritical to engage in, ummm, relations with someone of a particular socio-economic class, and then work to deny that class equality before the law.
Am I missing something?

In 1965, one of Lyndon Johnson's daughters reported that Strom Thurmond had asked her to join him on a bike ride around the Mall, and she asked the president for permission. Johnson gave her this priceless reply.
"When Ol' Strom dies, they're gonna need extra strong coffin nails 'cause his pecker'll pry the lid right off!"
He refused her permission to take that bike ride.

The South Carolina law regarding this:
SECTION 16-3-655. Criminal sexual conduct with minors.
(3) A person is guilty of criminal sexual conduct in the second degree
if the actor engages in sexual battery with a victim who is at least fourteen years
of age but who is less than sixteen years of age and the actor is
in a position of familial, custodial, or official authority to coerce the victim to
submit or is older than the victim.
Since Carrie Butler was 16 I guess it was ok.

Well, of course, the most right thing would have been to not engage in fornication to begin with. I'm not clear whether Strom knew about the pregnancy at the time? If his first contact with his daughter was at age 16? But "honorable" at least in the sense that I can think of two worse things than what he did: denying his responsibility and refusing any sort of support.

She does deserve much credit. She sounds like a daughter that a man would be lucky to have. It boggles the mind to think that he could consider her a very lovely daughter an also be an arch-segregationist. But the human personality is rife with paradoxes and contradictions.

How does this make her black?
To: Dr. Zzyzx
The title says she's black.
The first sentence says she's mixed race.
It seems that the implication is that black=mixed race

Why does the name "Williams" ring so many bells?
