SAUDIS AGREE TO EXPAND U.S. DEFENSE TIES
IMRA ^ | December 15, 2003 | MENL

WASHINGTON [MENL] -- Saudi Arabia is said to have agreed to expand defense and military cooperation with the United States in what could pave the way for major U.S. weapons sales to the Arabian kingdom.

U.S. officials said Saudi Arabia has agreed to the expanded cooperation after more than two years of deteriorating defense and military ties accelerated by the Sept. 11, 2001 Al Qaida attacks on New York and Washington. Fifteen of the 19 Al Qaida attackers were Saudi nationals.

The Saudi willingness to expand military relations was relayed to the Bush administration over the past few weeks. U.S. officials cited the toppling of the regime of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and the withdrawal of virtually all U.S. soldiers from Saudi Arabia.

The first stage of the expanded cooperation will focus on U.S. training of Saudi forces. The United States has proposed training of Saudi junior land force officers in a program designed to deepen the relations between the U.S. Army and the Saudi Army.

Those who do not learn from the PAST, will condemn innocent Americans to repeat it.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you, the all volunteer Saudi Arabian Allies.

Gee, do you think they have been reading the news, and looking at a few regime changes lately?

This falls into line with the thesis that Victor Davis Hanson was expounding upon in his last contribution to National Review on-line.

When President Bush leaves the WH in 2008, I predict his accomplishments will rival or outstrip even President Reagan's. Reagan ended the Cold War; Bush is on his way to bringing democracy to the Middle East, a feat heretofore never envisioned.

Interesting timing with the capture of Saddam; then this

and now the Saudis. Is this the beginning of the "rally round the flag, boys"?

The Saudis will continue to support and fund terrorism, no matter how strong their relationship with the US is. They want the US in their boat, because they are going after Al Queda together. Saudis hate Al Queda not because they kill Americans, but because they want to overthrow the Saudi monarchy.

Israel gets criticism from the Administration on almost a daily basis.

The Saudis are our friends.

9/11? What's that?

An inconvenience, to the House of Saud.

Let me know when the Saudis are going to stop funding Wahabbi mosques and buying off career politicians and lobbyists in this country.

The Saudis are not now, nor have they ever been, our friends.

The Saudi royal family is now "whistling past the graveyard". Their turn is surely coming.

I'm amazed at how rapidly things are changing since the capture of Saddam. I mean, the French and Germans are ready to negotiate on the debt issue. Now the Saudis are starting to recognize reality. I didn't think that the result was going to be this good.

Your post makes sense. In fact, whenever the Saudis say "we're your friends", "let's expand ties", etc., it makes me nervous. Just don't trust 'em.
