I read the book a long time ago. Have long felt it was at best super cheeky for the government to put those people through the misery and then on top of that ridicule them and not offer any support whatsoever.
Perhaps the government wasn't responsible for that craft. But they could at least have given more aid and comfort to innocent citizens.
