Jackson Lee said she was so impressed with Syrian President Bashar Assad during her visit that she invited him to speak in Texas, even though his country is designated by the United States as a rogue state and a sponsor of terrorism.

"I'm sure someone will write a headline, `Congresswoman invites a terrorist'," Jackson Lee said. "But that's not what I'm trying to do."

She said Assad showed his willingness to negotiate by meeting despite President Bush's signing on Friday of the Syria Accountability and Lebanese Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2003, which could impose sanctions on Syria.

"He's a 39-year-old president who even gave us a picture of him and his children," Jackson Lee said. "Let's see what he can do. He's not his father," a reference to Hafez Assad, who ruled Syria with an iron grip for 30 years before his death in 2000.

Whenever I meet a liberal who calls Bush stupid and accuses him of an inability to speak I now ask them what they think of Queen Sheila. The response is usually favorable because she is a hero in congress to the far left. From there it is but a small step to question how they could adore somebody who speaks in such an incoherent manner while simultaneously professing to hate the president for lesser linguistic offenses. This is what happens when partisanship gets out of control. Foreign policy is conducted by the executive branch, not the legislative branch. It doesn't work when the US is trying to isolate Syria but Shiela Jackson-Lee is inviting its dictator to the US on a cordial visit to meet with receptive audiences. It works across purposes. Jackson-Lee's naivete only is a further embarassment (ie: he sent us a picture of him with his kids). She is doing the U.S. a disservice by imputing distinction and respect to a tyrant that funds terrorists.
