Boy not allowed to distribute religious holiday flier in class

(12/18/03 - PLANO) — A Plano school refused to let a third-grader give classmates fliers saying candy canes are hard because -- Jesus Christ is "the Rock of Ages."

A religious liberties law firm threatened to sue over the incident.

Eight-year-old Jonathan Morgan attends Thomas Elementary School.

Morgan asked permission to pass out "The Legend of the Candy Cane" along with the red-striped candy at a holiday party in his classroom Friday.

But the nonprofit Liberty Legal Institute says school officials told him no student is allowed to offer a gift containing a religious expression.

Plano schools spokeswoman Nancy Long says district policy forbids students from passing out such materials.

But Long says each school has a central distribution area where such materials can be left for students to pick up on their own.

Items also can be handed out from a public sidewalk.

So, let me get this straight an 8 year old is expressing his religious liberty and a religous liberty law firm is going to sue because of he is willing to express his liberty. I know that this begs the question, but isn't that
what they should be fighting for?

I would go buy every candy cane in town and get a large number of Christians to drop them off a few candy canes with(Oh the horrors of it all) a Christmas card at the law firm all day long until Christmas.

It's a "holiday party", not a "Christmas party".

If any of the other students were allowed to distribute small gifts to their classmates, then this child was obviously singled-out for discrimination.

The school should encourage "diversity" and allow Christian gifts at the party. They school can also teach history, government, and geography as it related to the Christmas holidays.

My reading of the article suggests that the religious liberties law firm will sue the school. While its not explicitly stated it is sugested by this line:

The Religious Liberties Law Firm is threatening to sue the school and/or district because the school refused to allow the student to pass out the candy canes with the message.
