Well said Jeff. As a Christian I think our rogue court poses an even greater threat to our freedom.
To: Gritty
In Islam there is no free will, only the Will Of Allah. Very profound point and one eminently worth making. In fact the word Islam means something like submission.
I think I would consider Winston Churchill to be one of the greatest men of the 20th century if not the greatest. Perhaps a close second is Whittaker Chambers, who from ignoble beginnings as an American Communist cast off all of the evil that that represents and led the spiritual fight against communism spritually, ideologically and legally. Chambers was the ideological mentor of McCarthy, Nixon, Buckley, and Reagan among many others.
Chambers realized that Communism was the triumph of the enlightenment in which man reigned supreme. Our way of life was the triumph of God, in which God reigned supreme, but as Jeff as so eloquently pointed out, Man retains free will.
In one line, you, Gritty have pointed out the problem with the new totalitarian enemy we now find ourselves faced with and it can be fitted neatly into a Chamberseque view of the world. Our enemies reject free will just as the communists rejected God.
Somewhere, Whittaker Chambers is smiling on this thread.
To: Jeff Head
Well done, sir.
You have told the truth, and given an accurate representation of what millions of us think, intend, and believe.
Whether it is accepted or understood by others, and if it moves them, or inflames more hostility, is not part of our job. It is only up to God if they are to serve hate, or love. May they see the Light, and go to it within their hearts, some day. Those in Iraq and Afghanistan genuinely think they know us from the "media," films, and what their keepers have said. Our soldiers' presence among them should handily show the great untruth of all this, and, God willing, show them the civilized way to equal freedom, prosperity, health, and joy. They can do it...but they must have an example, and believe that they can do it, and have it for themselves, and their children. When they see demonstration of Strength without Hate, of Power without abusive Tyranny...of the virtues of sacrifice for others, that they too may know the joys of freedom...may they rise to the opportunity that God has brought to them, and never, ever put on the chains of tyranny and hate again.
The Canteen had an article about Iraqi cuisine...how great it would be to go there in times of free abundance among the People...and EAT !!! (a Muttly specialty)

Something I neglected to say, but meant to:
Because of our deep pain and outrage about the shamefully vicious 9-11 attack, we, just to stay in control of our feelings, attended to proceeding with the work at hand -- persuing the killers -- all the while relying on and inwardly referring all we did to our God-given moral code.
So, now, let us proceed with our proper job, and Pray for the enlightenment, the healing of the terribly afflicted, manipulated and dominated people of Afghanistan, Iraq, and all the region.
That is our greatest tool, and responsibility. Let's ROLL !

I might also add that it seems to me that the will of allah is what the imams and the like say it is. IOW, they say it is the will of allah but what it reduces to oftentimes is the will of the imams who proclaim their will to be the will of allah. So it's just totalitarinism dressed up to look like a religion. My $.02.

Big time bump for hearing islamic clerics and adherents openly condem the attacks on Americans, and Christians. No I am not holding my breath, we are more likely to hear about the poor palistineans hung out to dry by their own brethren. We have truly found the enemy and their proponents residing in the USA sucking up freedom while running off at the mouth about how the country has lost its way. Oh please spare me. Islam is not the religion of peace, it is what it is and the sooner that is recognized the safer we will all be.

FYI...I thought I would update and repost this. I'm glad you did. I believe if I'd read this before I would have remembered it. You are able to eloquently put into words what I think most Christians believe, but are unable to articulate. Wonderful piece of writing Jeff.
May God continue to bless you and yours.

"Well said Jeff. As a Christian I think our rogue court poses an even greater threat to our freedom." Let me ditto that.
With all of the cries for 'security', I fear not for my life, but for my freedom. All that the terrorists can do is kill me. My own government tries to restrict my freedom. There are things worse than death and the loss of liberty is one of the worst of them.

Well, as long as my grandkids, my own kids and my dear wife think so...I'm doing okay.
I take this tact regarding raising kids...
If I can somehow be half the parent my folks were...and raise my kids to be twice the parent I am...then I will have contributed tremendously to my community and my nation.
