Hi, Apple Pan Dowdy and I are making our reservations when she gets to my house Monday. It will be good to see you again. So glad that you are going too. I hope that they have those absolutely marvelous chocolate martinis.

Cruise ships nestle alongside the Havensight Mall in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

Wow! More fantastic photos from Doughty One. Thanks, D1.

Look on the left side of the artist's rendition of the Havensight Mall. You'll see the elevated tram that goes up the mountain, affording a spectacular view of the island, the port, the sea and some neighboring islands. You can get on the tram right where we disembark in Charlotte Amalie.

Welcome aboard to all that have registered the past week. Looking forward to meeting y'all and renewing past cruise acquaintances.

Hoosiermama, you'll be happy to know that H/A has the best-paying slots of all cruise lines....and I'm not kidding. This is a well-known fact in cruise circles.

Bizzy Bugz, I keep hearing about those chocolate martinis. The Zuiderdam has a "chocolate extravaganza" one special night on board. Chocoholics will go bananas (chocolate-coated, of course).

Maybe we can locate some chocolate martinis that night if we troll the lounges!

And, as an extra added attraction, we get imported Dutch chocolate candies on our pillows every night.

I am happy to see that you two are going again.... I did so enjoy getting to know you last year as dinner table buddies. I have told so many of my "single-again" friends your "fairytale" story of how you two met. I am trying to talk my dear hubby into coming along this year, but it looks like it will only be Mom and me again. I wish Mike would come though... I know he would enjoy you two... well everyone, for that matter.... as much as I did.

Yes I can. Do I have to exhale? Gosh I am so excited that you are going to be on the cruise too. Apple and I are ready to go now.
We are going to a Red Hat Society convention in Dallas in April. Have to wear a purple dress and a red hat to everything for 5 days. It will be lots of fun. As I said on the other thread, on the bike and the treadmill everyday until I leave.
I am looking forward to seeing all of the freepers.

Two of our ports-of-call, St. Thomas and Tortola, each have beautiful and intriguing islets merely a taxi, ferry or water-shuttle away. The two little gems are St. John which lies alongside St. Thomas, and Virgin Gorda which is next to Tortola.

ST. JOHN

All cruise ships that stop in St. Thomas have morning excursions to Trunk Bay Beach in St. John. Off this beach there is an underwater snorkel trail where you can see thousands of beautiful, "day-glo" tropical fish and colorful coral. There are many other gorgeous beaches on St. John. My favorite is Cinammon Beach. Sitting on that beach and viewing the specks of little green hilly islets dotting the water as you look out to sea is heaven, indeed. I'm not a snorkler, but just wading and bobbing my way out to the reef (its shallow-going) I saw with the naked eye all sorts of brilliantly-colored fish in the crystal-clear water.

Caneel Bay Beach is probably the most beautiful on St. John. The best snorkling is off Caneel. Through your goggles, you can see starfish, squid, rays and sea turtles, along with a super-abundance of exotic fish life.

Two-thirds of St. John is a U.S. National Park, on land donated many decades ago by the Rockefeller family. It's largely undeveloped, but all food, restroom, etc. amenities are there. Everything is spotless.

St. John is really a snorkler's and swimmer's paradise extraordinaire. Since we're in port from 8 AM till midnight, there's plenty of time to see the incredibly gorgeous beaches of this little jewel islet alongside St. Thomas.

The brochure in your cabin will provide details of any shore excursions.

A thumbnail sketch of Virgin Gorda, the islet near Tortola will follow.

VIRGIN GORDA

Virgin Gorda, the second-largest of the British Virgins, ranks high in popularity for cruisers. It lies alongside our port-of-call, Tortola.

In addition to the scenery, "The Baths" is one of the prime reasons to go to Virgin Gorda. The Baths is a small beach framed by giant boulders. The boulders spewed from an ancient volcano and lie scattered on land and sea.

To get to the beach, you pick your way through land boulders which form narrow caves and hidden grottos where only rays of light penetrate. There are mysterious sandy-bottom pools of water within the bowels of some of the cathedral-like caverns. It's cool inside in stark contrast to the warm temperatures after you reach the beach.

The beach itself is incredibly and totally beautiful. Here you can swim around huge boulders, and don snorkeling gear to view the abundance of sea life that hangs around them.

Whether or not our ship will provide an excursion to The Baths is unknown at this time. It's advisable to take a ship-sponsored excursion to Virgin Gorda as finding your way on this island is tricky. But it's well worth going for an extremely unique treat. I really hope there'll be an excursion provided.

Sounds kinda H.G. Wellesian!

Chad, you'd have to ask those who have participated, but like you I think this sounds like something I'd love to do.

Looks like you FRolks are in for one heck of a good time.

Tortola is one of the places I haven't made it to yet. All the rest of the stops are great. If anyone needs the name of a St. Thomas jewelry store that will do you right, please contact me. The deals to be had are out of this world.

We are already booked for a 10 day Mexican cruise on the Star Princess for September '04 or I could have talked my wife into this one. Good luck to you all and happy cruising.

ladyinred Check out a San Francisco cruise to Mexico or Alaska.. We are leaving from and sailing back into San Fran and back.. no flying necessary (or at least only a short flight) for west coast folks.

Maybe the FR cruise committee will explore that as a future offering.
