Could you imagine the dancing in the streets...the celebrations in Iran and other "religion of peace" countries if that earthquake happened in America.

Just a ponderance.

When I heard the numbers this morning it was horrible. May God comfort those who survived. Iran won't accept any help from us, but the people will accept our prayers.

No I can't because the Iranian people were the only people in the middle east who mourned for us at 9-11. They braved being beaten by the mullahs and their thugs to come out into the streets to hold candlelite vigils to show their sympathy for us. Many were beaten and thrown in jail, but they still came out.

And therein lies the tale: California has a 6.5 quake and what - 5 people die? Iran has a 6.3 and 4,000 die?

Do they really need nukes or should they put that oil money into siesmic engineering and building codes?

This is a perfect example of how far behind us these ME countries are. Inshah al Allah...

We DID have an earthquake that large in California last week, and only a couple of people (4 or 5) died. That's because we don't build our houses out of mud bricks.

Building construction in earthquake zones resists earthquakes to a degree. But apparently everyplace on earth is in an earthquake zone. These houses of piled stone and baked mud, while convenient, can't take a good bounce.

You've apparently been living under a rock.
Iranians braved arrest and beatings to show support for the U.S. after 9-11.
An apology would be appropriate.

That earthquake did happen in California a couple days ago. The result was some loss of life and some property damage. Iranians did not dance in the streets, apparently no one did.

Well, if you count all the original Spanish missions from the 1700's and all the original brick buildings from the 1800's that have been siesmically retrofitted, I'd say a fair number.

I don't know what you would consider ancient, but I doubt any collapsed buildings in Iran are of that category. Anything actually ancient would have already withstood the test of time.

My point is that siemic engineering is well along in developement and is no big secret. Current building codes in developed countries reflect that developement. Iran's poverty and social policies do not allow it to avail itself of this kind of science, except for large, important public buildings, if then.

IMHO, there is no reason, given Iran's valuable natural resources, that it should be acceptable that huge numbers of people die in natural catastrophies.

As I said, Inshah al Allah...

You Have GOT to be KIDDING!!
Sorry, but Anything 200 or 300 years old, doesn't qualify as ANCIENT in ANYONE'S book.
And YES, an ANCIENT - 2,000 year old - building (fortress, citadel) was 70% destroyed in this quake. It was a main tourist attraction that HAD withstood the test of time....Until Now.

You are correct however, that the regime doesn't give a darn about retrofitting, or providing safe housing. They couldn't care less if every ancient building or piece of art in the country was destroyed. But the Iranian People DO. That's the shame of this regime. They don't care about the country of Iran or it's people.

I was in Paso Robles a few days ago. The two women were killed when the second story of one building fell into the street. The ajoining store completely folded into itself. The next store in the row didn't even have broken windows.

Our modern (less than, say 50 years old) are built to shrug off most 'quakes...
