It's just like the movie "Babe" where the rustlers' dog kills the sheep, and the poor little pig nuzzles the dead sheep and gets blood on it's muzzle, leading the farmer to believe that he has a sheep-killing pig. I imagine that blood on Dotty's muzzle initially led to an incorrect presumption of guilt.
Or maybe they're just making excuses.
