I am not going to debate geothermal boring technology on this forum, but there are several major errors in your statement. The first is that a nuclear blast would result in a volcano. You are either overestimating the blast force of a nuclear explosive or underestimating the distance to the magma. You are also grossly overestimating the radioactive loss to the atmosphere of a below ground nuclear blast.

This proposal for a nuclear cascade induced venting has been discussed and analyzed in the academic literature. The basic premise is for a series of sub-ground nuclear blasts to loosen the upper crust sufficiently to let the pressure ooze rather than blow. If this interests you, look it up.

Hey, I didn't dismiss the facts or say that activity wasn't happening. If you're upset, you need to learn to read. Any Volcanologist can tell you that pressure, temperature, etc are just part of the picture. There are things that preceed eruptions that happen which are now predictable. What I said is Where are the rest of these things we should be seeing. Yes, I dismiss all this hype about supervolcanoes and the theorizing about that. Precisely because these guys have never seen one before - nor has anyone else. The whole notion on it's face is moronic. And simply because we know what happens in an eruption. The force of a blast has more components than merely how much lava is involved. But back to the earlier point, whether one is coming at all has more components to it than how warm the ground gets.

I'm reminded of the old heating pans that were used in early days to warm a bed. They were small little pockets of heated material that were placed between mattresses or under the bed that would warm the entire bed. The thing absent in the conversation at this point is clarity and common sense. What happens when you put a heater to water in a pool? Is the ground not saturated? How does ground water respond to heat? Does it dissipate it via mechanics of physics? Hmm. Gee, let us think instead of getting worked up. Let's deal with facts instead of hype.

Ignore the Supervolcano theories and zero in on the factors normally seen with vocanic eruptions elsewhere. If they can't establish the standard patterns, I'd not get overly worked up just yet. But note I said "overly". Concern may be warranted; but, to say the thing is going to errupt imminantly is a stretch until all the data is there to say it's going to happen.

Bunk. Was a good word earlier, just as good now. C14 was flawed in that it counted on factors that were not so. C14 levels are not constant. What's more, with it not being constant, the only measurement that can be certain with regard to c14 levels in the atmosphere are samples for a given present time where they can actually be measured. The rest is theory - which makes any date arrived at the same: theory. A glorified guess. When they realized it wasn't accurate and came up with something else, they calibrated their something else against c14 meaning that the element of assumption hasn't left the equation. A guess, no matter how technical you try to make it is still a guess.

Let's imagine for a moment that truth in advertising applied to science. There is no way their dating "theories" would stand up in court. And why? Because even short term the results have been shown in error. It's the nature of math, physics and logic that are against you. It doesn't destroy my worldview either way.

Like almost all else, the 600-mile "kill radius" is a little over-blown, a little conservative, and a very lot "random" in its effects.

Most ash damage will be downwind (almost always from the west-northwest!, and local topography will deflect and direct blast effects. Consider Nagasaki: it got hit with a bigger A-bomb than Hiroshima, but the hills reflects and deflected the blast so the net effects were somewhat less than the "valley" that focused teh energy at Hiroshima.

Bottom line: We don't when this thing will blow, but it is overdue. How much warning do we get? Days? Weeks? Years? Decades?

What will the warnings be like? Are these warnings, or just minor changes in Yellowstone's USUAL volcanic activity? We don't know.

How many early blasts are going to happen? Don't know.

Where and how much ash and dust and gasses get blown out? We don't know.

Will "venting" these gasses prevent it, or reduce its magnitiude, or simply blow the same avmount of gasses over a smaller area for a much longer period of time? Will

Is CAUSING a 150 year continuous eruption the size of Mt St Helen's "better" than a single potentially catastrophic blast that is over in only 15 days? (Remember, all the same amount of energy has to get dispursed: in a single large blast of unknown magnitude, or in looooooooooong series of smaller blasts of unknow magnitude - that might get larger anyway and encourage the single big blast.)

But the radioactive trash left over from each blast, even if kept deposited underground (that is, the blast DOES NOT cause a complete sudden venting) will still be present.

When the magma and hot rocks that are going to be moved as the pressure is released get to the surface, their radioactive cargo is still going to get carried up, some of which can escape and be released.

Some will be permanently buried in the magma and underground pockets when the magma hardens. But not all will.

And, magma (by definition) is volatile and can get remelted in later eruptions. The lava tunnels in Idaho west of Yellowstone are remnants of these lava flows, and obviously, ALMOST ALL of their contents kept flowing and was released.
