The August blackout that hit New York and a large swath of the Northeast greatly inconvenienced senior citizens.

Oh, you already knew that?

So did we.

That's why we were a little perplexed last week when we encountered a seven-page report, "When The Lights Go Out In The City," put out by Betsy Gotbaum, the city's public advocate.

You know, I think that I'm gonna vote for her re-election -- just for the (unintentional) humor potential.

Nah. She's just too loopy for words. Mostly harmless, and in a totally useless and powerless position. The only danger is that if Nurse Bloomberg leaves office before his term is up, she becomes mayor. Other than that, I just enjoy her unintended comedic potential.

This reminds me of the whining that is going on here in Utah. We've had huge snowstorms, and the power has been out. The power company wasn't on top of the outages as well as they should have been, but still did an admirable job getting all of the power back on. And people are whining that the power should NEVER go out and we need a new power company that can guarantee that. I just look at them cross eyed and think "get a life..."

Typical effete leftists who think that just because mommy and daddy provided every possible thing for them, that the rest of us owe them the same, for the rest of their lives.

I think Betsy, Schumer and Hevesi have a running competition of who can produce the most insane reports and press conferences.

We get it here too. Never mind that it is an INDIVIDUAL's responsibility to have some emergency food and water with them in case of quakes. Never mind that a power outage is predicted and warned about. Never mind that folks build in an area with ONE access road. It ALL is the responsibility of SOMEONE ELSE! Grrr! When the fires hit, the howling was ridiculous. I have a problem with not planning ahead when it really matters. If you are a senior or a family member, there is a really obvious need for planning and communication and having the basics on hand. :Sigh: Ask a whiner this if you please: How can the power stay on 24/7 IF the employees are snowed in and cannot safely drive from home to the power plant and if this is in Ut County, what happenned to the 2 year supply concept? :-) My friends have this cool little substorage area for this purpose (they use the food if $$ is tight). Our local whining has been going since the fires at the end of October 2003. To the credit of the folks hit the hardest, tons of non gov't folks (all sorts of religions are involved directly) are working on clearing the rubble and helping people rebuild and giving the basics to the folks who fled with their kids and pets and little else.

Never mind that it is an INDIVIDUAL's responsibility to have some emergency food and water with them in case of quakes.

I hadn't anticipated a citywide or regionwide blackout when I put my emergency stash together (on one cupboard shelf, and into a backpack). But I felt very smug that night, eating my Terrorism Food by candlelight, while listening to Sean Hannity on my new battery-operated radio.

I was actually able to loan someone a flashlight, because I had extras.
