What about what fat kids watch?

ABC anchorman Peter Jennings recently hosted a special telling us "How to get fat without really trying." The primary point was to encourage the public to view fatty foods as a public health threat on the order of cigarette smoking, and to encourage the viewpoint that government had better play a greater role as the national food police.

I dont care what advertisements target my children, Im the one with the money. Fat kids, with the exception of those that do have hormonal issues, are the responsiblity of the parents that allowed them to become that way.

Hear, hear!

I have a nine-year-old niece who is morbidly obese and eats the majority of her dinners out of a fast-food bag. She's not the one driving the family car to McDonalds and she's not spending her allowance on the stuff - the parents are bringing it home because it's easier than making a meal. In the mean time, the child gets bigger and bigger and is now under a doctor's advice for the problem. I say "advice" and not "care" because the parents still tote the fast food home for her.

Do commercials make her "want" fast food? Of course they do - they make me want it, too - but wanting ain't getting, and we need to pin the rose on her folks for this one.

You're exactly right. Kids today are fed fast food and the processed food that is loaded with carbohydrates, sugar and other sweet things that loads them up on fat. Coupled with their inactivity levels and lazy parents, it is no wonder these children are obese early in life. No longer do I see children outside playing sports (other than in organized leagues where their parents go apesh*t!), riding bicycles/bigwheels, playing pickle, building treehouses, etc. Their parents build treehouses for them. They stay inside and play Playstation instead of going outside. When they do go outside, they have those motorized monster-truck replica vehicles instead of using self-power by riding a bike or bigwheel.

Ain't a commercial that could get me to want one of their meals. Now a Filet Mignon at a "real" restaurant, that will get me. I'll have fries and gravy with it too, please.

I am so thankful my kids love playing outside. Cant wait to get to Texas where we will have our own backyard with a swingset and lots for kids to do. My son loves to ride his bike and just got a Green Machine for Christmas. Pedal power baby!
