Comprimise is required here. Don't despise: embrace

Exactly, but that won't stop the know nothings as they moan and complain as the housekeeper makes their bed as they post their tirades from their hotel room or eat a BLT sandwich.

".....the republicans can get away with this because conservatives have nowhere else to turn."

I feel differently than you do.....I'm not going to vote at all in 2004.

Abolish abortion and you won't have the demographic dynamic of a declining population to worry about. The foundation of America is economic growth. One solution to the dire situation we will find ourselves facing with spiralling social costs associated with an aging population is to increase the population of young workers. It's out of economic neccessity and misguided social programs that we find ourselves welcoming immigrants. Don't blame the immigrants. Without them we would be facing an(even greater)decline in the "standard of living".

Uh Happy maybe you are drinking happy juice. Reagan signed a tax increase, didn't sign any legislation to prevent abortions, and signed an amnesty bill.

I will wait for the details....for we cannot make decisions based on unfounded facts and fears....

I have no problem with a guest worker program...but that alone will not solve the present probem of illegal immigration....some of them will have the visa , some will not...and many will have esily forged documents we laughingly call Identification..or soon will have, even those that start with visas...and THEY CAN VOTE...

The idea of militarizing and closing the border has serious appeal.. and just as serious drawbacks....and will stifle legal trade by reducing it to a tricle demanded by constant real investigation of the people and goods passing our borders...and that will hurt the income of many or our industries...who provide jobs and income for Americans...

And bottom line... even militarization of the border will not stop the rampart smuggling of people and illegal goods across our borders...for we have about 15,000 miles of open border and costal exposure...The financal cost alone to set it up would be staggering..and the upkeep horrendeous...It will far exceed the increase in taxes that paying illegals social security will...

Not that I approve of paying illegals or even non citizens any social entitlements...just don't require them to pay social charges ( but their employer must still pony up their share..)and that doesn't include income tax which is not for social programs...but pays to run the government...

The only thing that will work is to devise a system of unforgeable citizen Identification...and "guest worker " identification...and require one or the other to even hold a job here...( We have such laws concerning illegal aliens...but first you have to identify them as such...

I do not wish to burden citizens with "papers" but intil we do so we will never be able to identify the rest...)

and I doubt that will happen...so expect the present situation to continue...

Reagan was an effective figure head. He shared your conservative convictions but could not kill the bureaucrat. He changed very little on the domestic/federal govt front.

"Of course the US will change with a larger influx of Mexican immigrants, but melting pot has always changed and remade itself when it absorbed large influxes of immigrants, in over 200 years that process has made us nothing but better."

But you have to remember that in the past those large influxes of immigrants WANTED TO BE AMERICANS. They assimilated. The Mexicans don't want to do that.

Might as well join DU and other sites. Need to look at the big picture here. What are we going to do about the 8 million illegal immigrants. As the previous poster said, there will be riots if people try to deport them. Kudos to Bush for trying to figure out a solution. Cant ignore it and look for pie in the sky solutions which will never work.
And seriously, do you think Bush will ignore conservatives views completly. Congress has already indicated that its DOA whatever plan Bush brings to the table so he has to try to do something.

Mexicans perform jobs Americans are too proud to do, it seems.

This creates wage & price distortions. It's basically free-market reaction to the distortions of the tax & regulatory burdens companies face, especially regarding employment.

Sadly, Dane is right. Reagan's record isn't as spotless as some conservatives believe.

And I guess your answer is to look the other way when people break our laws. How about this - do you think that allowing these 8 million people to stay here will help the middle class? Do you think that it raises the level of income or artifically keeps wages low? Do you think taxes to support these people will come from the UN? Are these people vaccinated against disease? Are you comforatable with them preparing your food? Do you know how to speak spanish - because if you dont you better learn how - in Tucson there are many areas where you cant do business without speaking spanish. How about if your in a car accident with an illegal do you really think they will pay? Where is there allegence, they do not have to take any test on American history or our government, do you really believe they care one iota about you and your family's welfare or supporting this nation? Think hard before you give your allengance to Bush who is no different than Clinton when it comes to his elitist actions.

Use the military to close tight the border. Over a couple of years they will filter back south. How long will they be apart from their families?

We hear this a lot-- Rush was spouting this crock yesterday.

There are plenty Americans ready to wash dishes, pick beans, clean house, if you pay them enough.  I'm not proud-- pay me a couple thousand$/minute and I'll be happy to wash your car.

The "work that Americans won't do" nonsense ignores the existence of the free market.

I thought the woman that called in during the last few minutes of Rush's show yesterday made a good point... that the Republican Party treated conservatives the same way the Democrats treat blacks.

She's right. It seems that in all their scheming, Bush and Rove have forgotten some elementary laws of politics:

11. In politics, you have your word and your friends; go back on either and you're dead.

34. You can't make friends of your enemies by making enemies of your friends.

[From "The Laws of the Public Policy Process," compiled by Morton Blackwell, President, the Leadership Institute]

Bush and Rove need a refresher course at boot camp.

What I find interesting is that the very vote he is seeking is from the same demographic that thought it was a good idea to vote in Vicente Fox and maintain a kleptocracy. Mexico has strangled itself by its own people. Recruiting and encouraging more infiltration by the same cast of characters that has made Mexico an economic/social Hell-hole is a virtual guarentee that the US government and social system will embrace and look like the same people who destroyed Central America.

Its clear that Bush is actually seeking the votes of criminals and to get their vote will cater to their criminal interests.

Want an end to the War On Drugs? George Bush has shown us the way. Just promise that the Junkie/Dealer Vote is worth compromising the social/economic structure of the US, and Carl Rove will draft a plan to decriminalize everything except the new demon drug Ephedra.

"but melting pot has always changed and remade itself when it absorbed large influxes of immigrants,"

I suggest you re-read the article. There is no more melting going on the pot. I live in Hudson County, New Jersey and oftentimes here it is like you are not in America at all, rather in some bizarre bazzar of the entire third world. Everwhere and with everything Spanish is offered as an alternative language of communication. Bush won't even propose something as simple as an end to bi-lingual education, I'm sure.

This is like Israel and the Palis, Israel must give so the Palis can take, and nothing is asked of them in return. They lied to us in '86 with the last amnesty and this is nothing but another lie. I'm not saying it's intended as a lie, just that it will turn out to be unworkable, unenforceable, and in the end, untrue.

There should have been an IMMEDIATE moratorium on Sept. 12th, 2001. If it were JUST the mexicans, that would be one thing, but you know it is going to be millions of muslims as well, who have already demonstrated their loyalty and love of America.

And the social security thing is OUT OF THE QUESTION!

They're obviously working and helping business and they are taking jobs most Americans don't want. I just don't see a person cleaning toilets everyday as somebody evil as you are wont to.
