Chicago Tribune ^ | Lisa Black

Posted on 01/08/2004 1:32:24 PM PST by Jubal Harshaw

A Wilmette homeowner who shot and wounded an intruder was charged today with violating the north suburb's ordinance banning handgun ownership.

If convicted, Hale DeMar, 54, faces a fine of up to $750.

"It would be unfortunate and potentially tragic to conclude from this incident that Wilmette families would be safer if they keep a handgun in their homes," Wilmette Police Chief George Carpenter said in a written statement. "The oppose it is true. Wilmette families are in greater danger if they keep a handgun at home."

What a stupid moron that police chief is. So if the home owner didn't have a firearm and the intruder assaulted or killed him, how is that safer? This guy needs to be a crossing guard not a police chief. No offense to crossing guards.

From his viewpoint it would be tragic -- Crime would go down, there would be fewer criminals to catch, his statistics would go down, his staff would be reduced, he couldn't cry for more money, etc.

So where was this "cop" when the shooting took place?
At home?
Out screwing his girlfriend?
At the donut shop?

Wherever he was, he sure wasn't out protecting the public.
Meanwhile, the homeowner was left to defend himself and now he's being penalized.

If that's the best the chief can do in a written statement, I think I'd take his advice with a grain of salt.

Sounds like georgie needs to be put out on his fat rotarian ass for making such an outrageous and irresponsible statement. Or maybe he's just looking to keep his keister in donuts. After all, we can't let the sheeple know they have a God given right to self-defense. Georgie needs his job.

That's correct. One of the council members was quoted in the Trib after this happened as saying he would not change the law, but he was glad the homeowner had a gun. It amazes me how dumb and rotten some people are.

Do tell George, what would you do if someone invaded your home? (you hypocrite!)

"The oppose it is true. Wilmette families are in greater danger if they keep a handgun at home."

Tell ya what George. I don't want your family to be in danger, and I'm willing to sacrifice my safety for yours, so you can mail your gun to me. (I'm so selfless sometimes!)

If you are familiar with this case, you'd know that the break-in was facilitated by keys obtained in AN EARLIER BREAK-IN.

There have been several similar burglaries in the north shore recently.

I'm sure that the chief was hot on the trail of the perps.

Indeed, it's pure Barbara Streisand to point to intrafamily handgun violence as if the guns were turning Ozzy and Harriet into Bonnie and Clyde. Make all guns disappear and lowlifes will still be harming and killing their family members and cohabitants. A police chief ought to know that.

The Willmete Police Deparment had an extra patrol assigned to the area for about 3 weeks.

The alleged armed peon home owner protected his family and home before the police arrived.

The alleged home owner should get a fair trial before they tke him out back and hang him.

The police chief should be fired ,tarred, feathered and run out of town on a rail. There is no cure for stupity.

The perp can sue the home owner, get judgement and own that house. Then it is his turn to be robbed.

If the all knowing police department was doing its job, then the home invasion suspect would have been pre-empted before entering the property. Since the police department was an utter failure at omniscience, the homeowner had an opportunity to defend himself. The police chief is an ignorant, gun grabbing nutball.
