A Wilmette homeowner who shot and wounded an intruder was charged today with violating the north suburb's ordinance banning handgun ownership.
If convicted, Hale DeMar, 54, faces a fine of up to $750.
"It would be unfortunate and potentially tragic to conclude from this incident that Wilmette families would be safer if they keep a handgun in their homes," Wilmette Police Chief George Carpenter said in a written statement. "The oppose it is true. Wilmette families are in greater danger if they keep a handgun at home."

What a stupid moron that police chief is. So if the home owner didn't have a firearm and the intruder assaulted or killed him, how is that safer? This guy needs to be a crossing guard not a police chief. No offense to crossing guards.

"It would be unfortunate and potentially tragic to conclude from this incident that Wilmette families would be safer if they keep a handgun in their homes." From his viewpoint it would be tragic -- Crime would go down, there would be fewer criminals to catch, his statistics would go down, his staff would be reduced, he couldn't cry for more money, etc.

So where was this "cop" when the shooting took place?
At home?
Out screwing his girlfriend?
At the donut shop?
Wherever he was, he sure wasn't out protecting the public.
Meanwhile, the homeowner was left to defend himself and now he's being penalized.

Time to move to a more firearm friendly state. Or, at least, to a town with Police Chief that is not as stupid.

Or maybe he's just looking to keep his keister in donuts. After all, we can't let the sheeple know they have a God given right to self-defense. Georgie needs his job.
