I was listening to a press conference a day or two ago via NASA TV online and they suggested that they might be able to roll only one wheel into "sleepy hollow" to see if it was solid enough to drive on or not. Also, if it turns out that the dark marks inside "sleepy hollow" are indeed bounce marks from the airbags, then it should be safe enough to drive on.

I do agree though, they should be careful. Nothing would be worse than to get that rover caught somewhere.

Mystery solved! It's Fred Flintstone house! Now, if we could just find out where there The Way-Outs are playing this weekend and get the rover over there....

I agree 100%+ !!!

Looking at the data from Mars Global Surveyor Thermal Emission Spectrometer (Current & Past) and of past spacecrafts spectrometer readings and reports. It shows
the Mars equator to be warm at times.

http://tes.asu.edu

Look at the daytime temperature readings near the equator , which is where Spirit is located (14 S & 175 W). At times
you can see very dark red, which is @ 20C+ that is @ 68 degrees fahrenhect on surface.

The Mars Spirit rover have a Mini-Thermal Emission Spectrometer , which detects the infrared light, or heat,
emitted by objects.

Red is heat from ground, and Sleepy Hollow area is redish, which means heat, the next question is "what is the temp readings?"

Here's the data and current readings of said area....

This might explain the oily /mud/sand near lander ???
Don't know..vet out

Wow, that is a great site. Thank you for the link.

I am disapointed they did not include a scale with the mini-thermal emission spectrometer. I am just guessing here, but if there were some kind of moisture mixed with the material in sleepy hollow, wouldn't it show up as cooler than its surroundings?

Hoagland missed one. What about the rock that looks like a triangle? In the main picture, see the three square outlines in the center (left, middle, right)? Look at the right square. Between that square and a smaller square to the right, there is a triangular rock. It's a perfect triangle! I would like to see that one in closeup. Does anyone know how to enlarge that?

Remember 1965 when we waited for the first picture of the "canals" :)

Well I know some terminology from collecting rocks and minerals for a while but nothing impressive. I could be absolutely incorrect in my use of it as well. I just know a little of the basics not much else.

I wish we had a geo ping list so some qualified geo's could share their insights and speculations.

hmm? Maybe this old lake bed is not completly dried up /
On earth we have underwater heating vents, and at Yellowstone it gets super cold, but the ground can stay warm in spots. I don't know.

Here's more wild images, check out the right center of the picture, it looks like a big gold ring ???
