The Spectator is right: the Dems are playing for 2008...so who do WE want to run in 2008

OK, gang.

Barring a catastrophe or another 9/11 attack, it's pretty much a given that President Bush will be re-elected in just under 10 months from today. That's been already listed here on FR today. And Jay Currie has a VERY good point. The Dems KNOW they've already lost this election, and are using it to position for 2008 and, God Help Us, Hillary.

Who do we have / want who is in position to run for the Republican nomination in 2008 ???

Given that President Bush would want to have his successor continue his policies, who you all of you think is a worthy successor to George W. Bush, and our best defense against the Hildebeast ???

I think Haley Barbour, the new Gov. of Mississippi could make a good run. Might even be a pretty good President.

Let us have him govern Mississippi for 4 years, then we'll see, but I agree, Haley Barbour is the finest and most wholesome, self-made man in politics today.

Barbour/Rice or vice versa works for me.

No chance -- none -- that pro-life folks will stay in the party for that.

If the choice ended up being between Condi and Hildebeast, Condi would get the pro-life folks.

Anyone ever wonder why so many politicians wives look superficially the same [R or D it doesn't matter], going back about 30 years or more?

Is this a stepford wives thing? Are they being built in a mad scientist's basement somewhere?

and these are the same people infatuated with Rice.

Actually, I kind of doubt that. The Bush Bashers have no horse in the 2008 GOP race, because they aren't Republicans, either actually, or in name.

IF Condi Rice is as smart as alleged, then she definitely will not run for President on a GOP ticket. Although I doubt she is as smart as alleged... I think we have sort of a Donovan McNabb phenomenon going on here - people very desirous that she succeed in politics because she is a black woman.

Have you not seen her resume?

Owens has set up a PAC in Washington for 2008.

Also it's a poorly kept secret in CO that Owens wants to go for the White House in 2008.

I should add one more name that I've heard floated. That would be Mitt Romney (Governor of MA). But I haven't the faintest idea what his true positions on the issues are. What is he at heart - a Utah conservative or a Massachusetts liberal? Or perhaps it's simply whichever one is more convenient at the time.

>>I respect Dick Cheney a great deal, but I'd like him to step aside in 2004. Have Condi run for VP in 2004 and then run for Pres in 2008.

I second that motion! She'll need some voice lessons is all. The woman's brilliant, and tough without seeming harsh.

I know all about George Allen: I worked on both his Governor and Senate campaigns as a volunteer. Methinks it's time to dig out my old A-Team pin again. . .

I bet they all support it. Jeff Flake does. Phil Gramm does.

I think it's more out of a desire to stick it to the Dems than any actual desire to see Condi elected to some office.

I have seen her resume. I have also seen her politics, and there is not a prayer in hell of her leading a national ticket.

Too portly. Mike Huckabee would be a better choice than Haley, but Mike is too portly, too.
