WSAHINGTON, Jan. 16 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Members of the Project 21 African-American leadership network praised President George W. Bush for his recess appointment of Judge Charles Pickering to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals.
Pickering, who was originally nominated in May of 2001, has over 40 years of judicial experience. During his legal career, he testified against the Ku Klux Klan, defended black clients during the Jim Crow era and helped set up the Institute of Racial Reconciliation at Ole Miss.
"President Bush should be commended for the courage that he has shown with Judge Pickering's appointment," said Project 21 National Advisory Board member Horace Cooper. "Throughout his distinguished career, Judge Pickering has shown himself to be a man of both professional and personal integrity. He's committed to equal opportunity and the rule of law. We need more judges who understand their role to interpret the law, not to rewrite it."
Project 21 has been a leading voice of the African-American community since 1992. For more information, contact David Almasi at 202-371-1400 ext. 106 or Project21@nationalcenter.org, or visit Project 21's website at http://www.project21.org/P21Index.html.

Excellent. Now it's time for Bush to use recess-appointments for the remaining judicial nominees that the Senate Democrats are holding up.

WHOA ... that was a quiet appointment ... I hadnt heard about it.
Now the way this works is that his appointment will expire with the next congressional session.
I certainly hope the new Congress in 2005 will re-confirm him pronto to the judicial position.

I'm glad President Bush exercised his perogative. But this:
During his legal career, he testified against the Ku Klux Klan, defended black clients during the Jim Crow era and helped set up the Institute of Racial Reconciliation at Ole Miss.
will not be mentioned on any major media. As a matter of fact, I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that the only mention of Pickering's past achievements will be about the sentencing in the 1994 cross-burning case. And that will be trunicated to the extreme.

BUSH, THROW THIS IN THE DEMS FAT FACES!

Shouldda been done a year ago!I think the timing may be right. This appointment will expire next year--after the November presidential/senatorial election. Bush undoubtedly hope to win additional political clout in that election--especially since a clear majority of the senate seats up for election will be in red states. This could be viewed as a tack to the right; conservatives who dislike Bush's immigration policy and other moves will be attracted to the polls by the issue of judicial confirmations.
