VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- An American academic wants to see a Bible translation, put together by scores of conservative scholars, become the one Bible everyone uses.

Alan Jacobs, an English professor at Wheaton College near Chicago, said the new English Standard Version Bible, whose translation was overseen by Vancouver's J.I. Packer, is the only one with the potential to become the universal Bible of all English-speaking Christians.

We probably all use more than one translation. Each, of course receive different messages and inspirations from reading the same passage in different seasons; and that is good, as the WORD is Living. But multiple "translations" sadly, ends up changing the INTENT of the Author.

Agreed. When I don't understand a passage, I end up doing word searches on in the orignal language. Takes longer, but the Holy Spirit seems to teach more so much more that way. Otherwise, I try to let Him do the teaching/convicting.

The Navarre is great! I have a few of the Gospels, but need to buy the rest. Not very portable, though :-) I have the New Jerusalem Bible too, it has very traditional language. I bought it from EWTN.

Yes! the Navarre is like a Desktop and the Jerusalem is like a portable laptop.

LOL--It also very comforting to see Fr. Groeschel using the same copy we use.

Of course we all agree that Swiss is the most original version of Cheese.

If there is any religion that is more vile than Cheddarianism, it is Swissterism.

I hate you Swissters.

Then we'd all have to stand in line for so long and wait our turn. Can't we at least have two?

Considering those behind "new" translations and versions OFTEN have an agenda, I say stick with what we have and chose from that. What's sad is that people are soooo stupid that they can't master an older version or a translation. There are typically concordances available that you can look up words in to pinpoint meanings. Surely using a dictionary isn't THAT difficult! A concordance is just like a dictionary.

What I find is the unbelievable amount of difference between denominations.

You bring out some valid points. The very device that was included to help us access God's Word (the inclusion of Chapter and verse divisions) has through time given Christians a dangerous nearsightedness. We Christians like to take the different chapters and verses as though they were Legos(tm) and build whatever we want - instructions notwithstanding. Think context whenever you read the Bible. Read an entire letter and think upon it - don't use one sentence to build an empire.

I know my fellow Cheddarianists believe that one can lose their cheese.

It is not so much the cheese you choose but the way you slice it. Some will find Cheddarianism is grating others will positively meltdown.

Here's the problem. Because of the divisions of denominations, it is difficult to, even by reading to come to a sound conclusion. First there is one bias. Second there is bias from pastoral leaders. Then there is bias among our peers within the church. That is a ton of pressure to overcome to get to the truth. And even worse, each of the above can show you chapter and verse likely where they are supported by scripture.

That is so true. Good analogy about the legos. I see people just leaning on a verse here and there without having a clue what the context of that verse was. Although I believe I verse/phrase can very much stand on its own especially through the conviction of the Holy Spirit, I think it is dangerous when people don't know the context and then begin to build an empire on it, as you said. And yet, it happens all the time.

The words of the bible were written in hugely diverse times and cultural settings.

I heard a fundamentalist say much the same thing. He was preaching about how the devil takes a verse here and there, weaves them together and promotes false doctrine from them. He had me paying attention until he came back after the commercial break and used 5 different authors from a 1200 year time frame to make his next point.

Religion, or control of it, will be critical for the next step in the NWO. False prophets abound.

I agree there are too many denominations. They should all become Reformed Baptists (my own perspective).

(Oh, that's not what you had in mind?)

The simple fact of the matter is that denominations exist because we don't agree completely. The idea is that we are all Christians de nomine (of the name) __________.

Denominations certainly beat the heck out of trying to make all Christianity homogeneous in their theology. That's been tried before, and it resulted in horrors like the Inquisition.
